My favorite part of living in Los Angeles is the amazing vegan cuisine (I'm not even vegan). One of the very best places I have been to so far is Real Food Daily. Although I frequent the one in West Hollywood, there is a location in Santa Monica as well.

As is true with many vegan restaurants, the substitutes here taste better than the real deal! Also, unlike many vegan restaurants that use strange "chickn" and "fake-on", Real Food Daily relies on flavor over texture/looks. So even though your tempeh bacon may not look like real bacon, it's seasoned to taste EXACTLY like bacon.

The only problem I've run into at Real Food Daily is the VASTNESS of their menu! Every time I go I take at least 20 minutes to decide what I want. They have eveything - monthly/weekly specials (always are amazing), salads, sandwiches, soups, rice/grains bowls, organic beer, freshly squeezed juices, and sumptuous desserts. However - if its your first time you HAVE to get the Real Food Meal:

It's the dish on the left. It comes with brown rice, cabbage salad, veggies (plus sea veggies!), seaweed, and beans that are the current Special (these look like pink beans?) And it all comes with your choice of an amazing sauce to douse it with - I've gotten the ranch and gravy and both are A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. (FYI the meal on the right is their vegan TV dinner with gravy!)

I grabbed this image from Flickr, check out more images of Real Food Daily on Flickr if you want to drool all over yourself!

Other things I recommend include: any of the desserts, all of the beers (organic beer never makes me dehydrated/feel terrible in the morning like most alcohol does), the fettucine with meatballs, and the cornbread with carrot-cashew butter. Actually, I don't think you'll dislike anything you order.

After I eat at RFD I feel GOOD. Full of energy and totally satisfied.

I am by no means a vegan. I like my meat. I did visit RFD while on vacation in CA and have to say that at first I was a little skeptical about trying the food. You know fake meat and such; but to my surprise the food was fantastic and delicious. I had the vegan TV dinner with gravy and it was very tasty. So all you meat eaters give it a try. You body might just love you for it.

Ah, you're making me jelous! I am not vegan either but I love vegan food, I am not a big meat fan anyway. Too bad they don't have any Real Food Daily around here in Boston. So far Trader Joe's has been my only vegan fare destination. Thanks for the review!

Anastasia, I'm not sure where in Boston you are located but you should check out Veggie Planet in Harvard Square if you haven't already. Weird decor/vibe but EXCELLENT vegan food - I usually just got takeout (it's cheap, too!). Also, I used to work at Flour Bakery (two locations - one in S. End and one in Fort Point Channel) and there are some amazing vegetarian/vegan options there as well..not to mention DELICIOUS french-style pastries. Also, the owner of Flour owns a chinese restaurant that is TO DIE FOR - and the menu is portioned off into vegetarian/gluten-free/nut-free sections, which I really like. It's called Myers+Chang. I'll have to think of some more to tell you! I'm also thinking about reviewing all these places too...so that way you can learn more :)

Thanks so much for your recommendations Melissa! I'm all ears (or eyes in this case) if you decide to review any of them!

I tried to test out RFD last night. They were very nice, but it took them 20 minutes to bring me a lemon aid, and then another 15 by the time they asked us to order. By then, my friend and I were both starving, and became increasingly weary of how long our meal was going to take. The prices were a very high, so the risk of spending a lot of money on something that was going to take a while and might not be great (for the price.) They were nice enough to comp my lemonade. I will definitely attempt …

With two locations, in Santa Monica and West Hollywood, California, Real Food Daily has “developed a loyal following”, from the someday to the everyday vegetarian, celebrities, trendsetting young eaters with sophisticated palates to the mature diner seeking gourmet health supportive cuisine.
