Saigon Star: A star indeed!

  • Sep 29, 2009
Saigon Star (西貢星) is THE BEST Vietnamese restaurant I've ever been to. It's a small outlet with less than 20 tables and can be found on Highway 7 in the neighborhood of Richmond Hill which is north of downtown Toronto. This place is often packed with diners at night and if you really want to get a table easily, it's best you come in the day on a working week! Otherwise, you'll either have to visit before 5.30 pm or after 8.30 pm.

The food here is awesome. I always make my pilgrimage here whenever I visit Toronto. It's not too far from where our place is so it's our favorite haunt basically. So, I guess I've self appoint myself to be its spokesperson ;-)

The must order items in this restaurant are in fact NOT Pho. Saigon Star specialties are:
  • Curry Crab (Vancouver crab): This is just finger licking good and you do have to make sure you are not dressed in white when you are visiting this restaurant! A crab costs about $28-35 depending on how big it is. The curry is the best and when dipped with French bread (toasted), it's heavenly! My very most favorite!
  • Shrimp+Beef Summer Rolls (or Rice Paper Rolls): You've to tell them to make these specially for you. It's a combo and it's special order. Not to be found on the menu. The combination of shrimp and beef in a roll, oh my, you won't know what you've missed until you've tasted this. I got the chance to try this out as my aunt knows the boss personally. But I'm sure if you ask them nicely, they'll make it for you too!
  • Barbecued Oysters: Well, high in calories but who cares? ;-)
There are a great many other Vietnamese dishes you can try so a single visit is never enough. It's economical and food is sensationally good. So, make sure you make your way here if you're in the neighborhood! You will not regret it!

For those with sweet tooth, try the Soursop juice, Durian juice or my latest discovery & favorite, the Avacado + Soursop blend. Avacado juice on its own can be a little heavy but with soursop mix, it became refreshing instead. An excellent dessert, I simply love it! In addition, you can also try the traditional Vietnamese Drip Coffee here. Be adventurous, it's what life is all about!

This looks very similar to a Chinese restaurant I go to "R & G Lounge" Barbequed Oysters are so bad for you but who cares like you said! ;-P

All of that looks and sounds amazing!  And you can get avocado and soursop juice here, too?  Double amazing! :)
