My favorite old school watering hole has an unbelievable dinner item...the Volleyballer's Special: a teriyaki chicken breast, baked potato and salad for $7.95....you would think it was from the Charthouse. Steak tacos are great too!

A Manhattan Beach institution. Where else can you watch multiple games while playing quarters or flip cup, then watch the sun set, over the Pacific, then chase it all down with a signature Fanta shot. Can smell like stale beer, but that's part of the charm. Bonus points for vending machine in men's bathroom.

Good place for a quick beer on a hot day. Not the best for its nightlife though. Beaches across the street must be rubbing off on it...

One of the few places that serve pitchers of beer. Drinks are stiff. 180 bombs! MB Locals beach bar.

Fanta shots and pitchers of beer. A Rx for happiness (and morning headaches).

About this restaurant

Wiki

The Shellback Tavern came to life as The Knothole and then The Surf after World War II. Famous for their pizza and reasonably priced drinks, the location became an instant hit on the beach bar scene. The original owners were Don Hartsong and Ed Jamison. In 1973 local bartender Richard Swartz and his partner Jim Korshall purchased the bar and renamed it the Shellback Tavern. Jim sold his interest to former Hermosa councilman Jack Wood. Jack sold to local resident and patron Steve Petroff in 1976. Steve and Richard remained partners until May of 2000. Manhattan Beach native Bob Beverly took over ownership in 2000 and still owns the Shellback today.
