Subway: Eat (Reasonably) Fresh!

I'm a big dude. Not in the "I work out five hours a day and have tickets to the gun show" big, I'm more along the lines of "I stay up way too late at night and like chips and salsa--sue me" big. With that said, I will admit that I'm trying to lose weight. I've been a member of a gym for quite some time now and have worn the heels of my shoes out on plenty of ellipticals. I'm currently on my second run through the Insanity workout and am proud to say that I lost sixteen pounds on the first go round.

Foodwise, I'm still struggling. For the past few months I've been bringing my lunch (usually something with tuna or grilled chicken in it) to work with me, but a big guy has to get in some fast food every now and then. I cheat once in awhile and head for McDonald's, Burger King, or any of the other usual suspects, but Subway offers one of the best fast food meal options at a decent price and is also pretty good for your body.

I've grown very fond of their Veggie Delite sandwich. I normally get it on 6" whole wheat bread with spicy mustard, a dash of mayo, and all of the veggies. I can honestly say that just that small amount of mayo makes it hard for me to remember that I'm eating a meatless meal. I'm no vegetarian, but I've grown to really love vegetable in the past few months.

Once in awhile I'll splurge and get a BLT. Again, I go with the 6" whole wheat and only have bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, and spicy mustard with a bit of mayo. It's not the most flavorful meal in the world, but it does suffice.

As for the store itself, I find that the majority of the Subway restaurants I visit are very clean. The sandwich artists vary from excellent to "I couldn't care less about this job" on the service scale. The bulk of them are pretty good, though. In comparison, I find that most other fast food places (particularly Burger King in the last year) tend to have less enthusiastic employees who are really just hoping to make it to quitting time. Most of these places are also pretty dirty as well.

Subway is a great option for anyone on the go like me who has a tendency to not eat as healthy as they should. Of all of the fast food joints out there, it's your safest bet for a healthy meal.

I want to like Subway more, but not until they remove "azodicarbonamide" from the food.

In college, the lunch choices near campus were pretty grim. Pizza place that only got busy after 12am? No. Sbarro? Absolutely not. Food Court chinese food? UGH. Burrito? Maybe, but not every day. Subway, for a long time, was down in the negatives in my book. It was just plain nasty! But then along came Jared, who claimed to have lost 245 pounds simply by eating only Subway sandwiches, and suddenly the restaurant chain rocketed back into success! Not in my books, though. Subway restaurants, owned by Doctor's Associates, Inc, is a chain of fast-food sandwich restaurants in over 88 countries worldwide. It was started in 1965 by Fred De Luca who, at age 17, opened his first sandwich shop as a means to raise money for college.

In addition to serving submarine-style sandwiches, Subway sells salads and a small assortment of baked goods (mostly cookies). Their growth and success has widely been attributed to the rise of a large health-conscious clientele that has shunned traditional fast-foods such as McDonald's and Burger King.

As of 2008, Subway was the third-largest fast-food franchise on the planet, just behind Yum! Brands and McDonald's. It is currently the world's fastest-growing franchise.
