So after I settle in to the hotel, and shower off that plane smell and film that forms on you from sitting in that recycled air for too long, I clearly need something to eat. Luckily for me, some of my old high school buddies relocated to LA so we had an impromptu 15 year high school reunion. Also luckily for me, they both live close to Swingers (http://www.swingersdiner.com/) in Santa Monica. When I pulled up my friends were waiting outside and said there was a bit of a wait. We were seated within 10 minutes of getting there. A fourth person was joining us but wasn't there yet. The seats are covered in a nice thick layer of easy cleaning plastic (think old lady's couch in the 60s or 70s) that would stick to you legs if you are wearing 60s or 70s short-shorts. The choice of booth was interesting because when the three of us sat in it and we were practically on each others' laps. Now keep in mind we have one more person coming. We're all almost or around 6' tall and the fourth is probably 6'3 and built. Needless to say we were relocated. The server came over and dropped off three waters. We told her that we were waiting for one more. Sadly she said, 'ok good, because our kitchen is slammed right now and they could use a few minutes to catch up.' Hmm. Ok. Thanks for the warning. The saddest part is that the dining room was only 3/4 full and she looked grateful for a break.
So we are three average white guys were sitting at the booth and finally our fourth friend came and sat down. He's a tall, built black guy. When the server came over to drop off the fourth fresh water, she looked perplexed as if to say 'hmm..Who’s the newest addition to the table? There were three, now there are four....who get's the new water?' After what seemed like an eternity the three of us all pointed to him to help her out. Amazing. Maybe she takes color blind to a new level, or she's just really that dumb. Oh well. Once the restaurant came to its senses, I ordered the classes Turkey Club sandwich. Was it mind-blowing? No, but man did it hit the spot. The bacon was crisp, the veggies were fresh and the toast was perfect toast. The fries were good and hot and fresh and it hit the spot. In fact, the whole lunch hit the spot. Great food, great friends and fun, friendly service finished up a great first afternoon in LA. I've been to Swingers a million times before and I'll go a million more. I always have a great time and a reliably good meal. You should go when you're in town if you want a funkier, hip version of Mel's Drive In.
