Make Your Own Burger...Nom Nom Nom

  • Jul 20, 2009

The Whuffaoke crew (http://www.whuffaoke.com) stopped at The Counter in Salt Lake City on July 19th for a meal after a long drive from Vegas. We were amazed at the options for create your own burger and how yummy everything was. I had a beef burger with goat cheese, carrot strings, black olives, cranberries, provelone and ranch dressing. Sooooo good!

For those carb watchers, you can get your  burger served on a bed of lettuce. For you carbaholics, like me, you can select a white or wheat bun or get completely crazy with an English muffin! Definitely get the Deep Fried Pickle Chips and Sweet Potato Fries. They were gone before we knew it.

The resturaunt had a diner feel with the aluminum chairs and soda fountain countertop area. They even serve milkshakes, which were delish! The milkshake of the month was Cherry Pie. They were out of cherries, so they made it with Strawberries instead.

Unfortunately, The Counter is not dog friendly so we had to leave Ridley, the Whuffaoke Pug, outside. Thankfully, it wasn't busy so we had a chance to select a table near the door allowing us to keep an eye on him while he was outside.

The Counter was so good we went back today for lunch as well and all tried new things. We got the Pickle Chips and the Sweet Potato Fries and I had the Ham and Swiss, minus Swiss and added Provolone instead.

One bonus at The Counter was on the first day, our waiter rocked our world when he asked if we wanted to split everything and offered us spearate tickets. He even split the starters by 5 tickets. This is super helpful for us as we're paying individually and for him to offer to do so earned Gold Stars!

Awesome! I've been hearing about a special Tuesday or Wednesday deal at select Counters where they do a set of 3 sliders and a flight of beers for $15 or something. Love the Counter, great review! Counter Burger + wine pairings, coming next? :)

I just had Counter burgers a few weeks ago. Drove all the way to Walnut Creek for them. So amazing! Love the idea of Counter Burgers and Wine Pairings. You're on to something...

I love The Counter! Your burger sounds like something I usually get. Have you tried the veggie patty? It's pretty good! We usually get the 50/50 fries, so I really recommend that too.

They are amazing! And The Counter brings a ranch dipping sauce as well as an apricot goodness. AMAZING!

good review -- too bad San FRancisco doesn't have this -- at least I don't think so....

Last I checked, the closest were in the south bay, in San Jose and Palo Alto. I hope they come to SF :)

Would totally drive to San Jose/Palo Alto for this place. Nom nom nom-a-licious!

Yeah, you should see their website where they build these impossible burgers -- don't watch before dinner!

i like that splitting the check tip. good stuff. it's very interesting that they are very willing to split the check up for you, but they won't get anywhere near cutting the chicken....veeeerrrryyy interesting.

If I ever go to their Palo Alto place, I will be sure not to order chicken!
July 24, 2009
I want to know WHY they won't cut the chicken...so weird!

Good to hear that the Whuffaoke crew is well-fed on the road!  Mmmmm... Your strawberry pie shake, ham and provolone burger, deep fried pickle chips and sweet potato fries manage to make my Double Double, animal style fries, and Neopolitan shake from In-N-Out seem almost... boring.  A difficult feat!

That's really nice that your waiter offered to give you all separate checks.  In some other places, if that were requested, the waiter would give dirty looks!

Neopolitan shake? I've never heard of that...will have to check it out next time I'm at In-N-Out. ;D And yes--I LOVE when we're asked if we want separate checks and they do it with no problem. Great customer service when traveling across the U.S.

This review is just focusing on the chili at the Counter.      I've tried both the regular chili and the turkey chili.    Regular Chili: This is very meaty which normally you would think is a good thing.  Really the only thing in it besides meat is some stewed tomatoes.  I really prefer more to my chili like... hmmmm.... i don't know... beans?!?!  or something.  This chili is actually really good on (and probably designed for) french …

I had a coupon for a "buy one, get one" burger dealio so I called my friend for lunch. She drove to my place and we walked up to Sunset and over to The Counter to have a burger. Because we walked, I can neither complain or rejoice about the parking situation. First impressions are important and the girl that sat us was friendly. My only problem with her was that she asked how I was and as I was preparing to give my standard "I'm outstanding" response, she was …

I can't say that The Counter serves the best hamburgers I've ever eaten, but they are damn good.  The first thing I look for (or taste for) when biting into a burger, is the juiciness factor.   I want the juices to squirt into my mouth and wake up my taste buds.  Those buds were dancing with the first bite of The Counter burger.  Next, for me, is flavor.  Some hamburgers have a steamed taste.  That's a taste that is difficult to describe, but you know …

Ok someone seriously needs to explain to me what I am missing. Since when is paying almost $10 for a burger a good thing? I tried the counter last night for the first time because I had heard it was "the burger joint" to try. I cracked up when I looked at the clipboard because I couldn't believe how pretty much anything worth adding to a burger was $1.00 more than the already $7.95 you were paying for a small burger. Before I move on, let me define the counter's idea of small....its really small …

A lot has been written about the ability to customize your burger at The Counter. For some reason, however, I have received more satisfaction applying customization to their Chicken sandwich. To start, the Chicken is a delicious piece of white meat that has been well cooked each time (too often chicken breasts are overcooked and dried out as a result). Through careful experimentation I am getting close to the optimum combination (for my taste). Today I tried the Honey Wheat Bun with the Soy Glaze …
