Custom Built Burger Restaurant

The Counter burgers score on all counts---even dieters.

I can't say that The Counter serves the best hamburgers I've ever eaten, but they are damn good.  The first thing I look for (or taste for) when biting into a burger, is the juiciness factor.   I want the juices to squirt into my mouth and wake up my taste buds.  Those buds were dancing with the first bite of The Counter burger.  Next, for me, is flavor.  Some hamburgers have a steamed taste.  That's a taste that is difficult to describe, but you know it when you bite into a burger that has it.  It tastes a little like it's been sitting around on a warming tray steaming for awhile.  The Counter's burgers are cooked to order and have a nice charred crust.  (It's difficult to get a crust on a burger that has steamed).  Another plus for the burgers is that they come the way you order them.  I like mine very pink in the middle--not quite rare, but a little before medium rare, and they get it right. 

Now let's get to the meat of the story.  What makes The Counter's burgers so unique?  In addition to a great burger, it's the multitude of choices you are offered.  First you choose the kind of meat you want, beef, turkey, veggie or grilled chicken.  Next comes the size, 1/3 lb., 2/3 lb. or 1 lb.  I always get the 1/3 lb. which is just enough to satisfy me.  (I consider myself to have an average female's appetite.)  Then you decide whether you want a classic burger on a bun or in a bowl (for those on the  South Beach diet.)  

Now comes the fun part.  Building Your Burger.  Step #2, choose the cheese from eleven choices that range from Danish Blue to yellow American.  Step #3 is to select 4 toppings from a list of 16 veggies and 2 fruits (dried cranberries and grilled pineapple).  You can also choose premium toppings, which cost a little extra.   Step # 4 is to select a sauce. There are 18 choices and they range from back-in-the-day Country Buttermilk Ranch to the dieter's favorite--Dijon Balsamic.  The bun choices go from the obvious hamburger bun to a Honey Wheat Bun or an English Muffin.  

Up until now, I have gone to The Counter because I craved a good burger.  But the last time I was there, the couple on one side of me was eating a turkey taco with a side of sweet potato fries that looked delicious.  The couple on the other side of me were just as happy with their Unique Veggie burger. 

For those of you trying to consume beef without hormones or antibiotics, this is the burger destination for you.

Nice review, I was curious as to what you put on your particular burger. Last time I was there I had a lot of veggies and sauce and my creation collapsed when I picked it up! (as did the burgers of my two friends). Maybe I gotta switch buns b/c the regular hamburger bun did not cut it. The cool thing about The Counter is getting recommendations on what works and what doesn't until the perfect hamburger is formed!

I just went back to the Counter and ordered a 1/3 lb. burger with grilled onions and mushrooms. It was to high that I had to dispense with the top bread. kjmedia had recommended the English Muffin , so I tried it. Much better than a bun, but still a little difficult to eat. But, worth it!

I see you encountered the same issue I had...if only The Counter offered a baguette to contain all of the ingredients, the collapsing burger issue would be solved. I feel like some other burger place on Helms Ave and Montana Ave has already figured out this conundrum...

Great review!! I was just reading about The Counter in Entrepreneur Magazine and my interest was peaked. They were mentioned as one of the most up and coming franchises and it sounds like for good reason. I have got to get to The Counter after reading this review!

Great review... you are a natural at this!! i cant wait to hear more. and in case anyone is wondering... i take Marlene's word as gospel for all things food and cooking. she has a bit if a track record here too. i've just added some data points from her earlier work... it's nice to see her later work here on Lunch! What a solid initial review!!! We just got a new Counter in El Segundo not too long ago, the town adjacent to Manhattan Beach.. I'll let @Butter share with you his signature sandwich, which I have adopted for the most part. I will share this part from it, the item that I love there that has taken my Counter liking to a whole new level is the English Muffin!!! I'll never go back to the normal bun!! Curious what you may think of it.. Great review!!

This review is just focusing on the chili at the Counter.      I've tried both the regular chili and the turkey chili.    Regular Chili: This is very meaty which normally you would think is a good thing.  Really the only thing in it besides meat is some stewed tomatoes.  I really prefer more to my chili like... hmmmm.... i don't know... beans?!?!  or something.  This chili is actually really good on (and probably designed for) french …

The Whuffaoke crew (http://www.whuffaoke.com) stopped at The Counter in Salt Lake City on July 19th for a meal after a long drive from Vegas. Ok someone seriously needs to explain to me what I am missing. Since when is paying almost $10 for a burger a good thing? I tried the counter last night for the first time because I had heard it was "the burger joint" to try. A lot has been written about the ability to customize your burger at The Counter. For some reason, however, I have received more satisfaction applying customization to their Chicken sandwich.
