This album is exactly what you'd expect from this particular American Idol winner. Rock anthems, ballads, and an album cover picture of Daughtry with hair. With writing credits on 11 of the 14 songs (there's a sneakily hidden track after song 12, twelve minutes in), Cook establishes himself as a singer/songwriter, and steps up from his Analog Heart days. All he needs now is someone to create better album jackets.

Short Attention Span Summary (SASS):

1. Declaration: We hear you!
2. Heroes: Rockin' intro, monster rock ballad
3. Lights On: My son loves this track, and plays it at every opportunity. It's even on his cellphone as both the ringtone and the wake-up tune.
4. Come Back to Me: This completes the opening quartet of best tracks on the album.
5. Life on the Moon: Okay, make that a quintet
6. Mr. Sensitive: How emo can you go? Hard rocking chorus.
7. Lie: I like it, and that's the truth
8. Avalanche: the snowball's rolling
9. Permanent: Dude sings his heart out
10. The Time of My Life: The title-winning song

A solid album, recommended for fans of arena rock, eye-liner embellished rockers and American Idol.

Thanks for this nice review! I found it from Twitter. I'm a huge Cook fan & love his album. It's hard to choose a favorite song! I wish you hadn't left out Bar-ba-sol, I Did it For You, & A Daily AntheM! Bar-ba-sol is THE most rockin' song on the CD & a fan favorite! I'd also like to hear your thoughts on the hidden track: Kiss on the Neck, which is another fan favorite & was written by David & his brilliant lead guitarist & close friend, Neal Tiemann. By the way, David was one of the art directors for this CD (he has a degree in graphic design), so he helped create the album jacket. =) However, I agree with you. While I love the color scheme & font, the cover picture does not represent the David we all know & love. David is almost always seen with a smile on his face & has such a kind disposition, so this picture kind of bothers me. Still, that doesn't take away from the quality of the music on the CD. Anyway, thanks again for the review! And for all Cook fans: if you haven't seen David & his band live in concert yet, I highly encourage you to catch a show! They're playing small venues & David really engages the entire audience. Not to mention his always impressive voice & hilarious banter. =) The band also has incredible energy & are so much fun to watch! They're all very nice & incredibly talented young men.

Thanks for the review - especially the SASS ;) - and insight into Cook's effort. I was a big Cook fan last season of AI and have been meaning to check out his current stuff. Will definitely do that based on your notes here.

Hi Darin - His new stuff is a definite improvement over Analog Heart
