Don't Hate Fall Out Boy before you've read this review

Fall Out Boy is considered to be one of the most overrated bands in music today especially now that Pete Wentz seems to have his hands in too many different pots. I however would like to disagree with those of you who put them on the back burner purely because they sound more like a bubble gum pop band or maybe even a whiny emo band.  Lets take a look at Fall Out Boy from a different perspective.

The Good-Fall Out Boy are one of the musical geniuses of our time, and I'm not saying that 3 chorded music is great. However, I believe that lyrically Fall Out Boy is one of the most genius bands I've ever heard. Bob Dylan doesn't have a great voice or much variation in his musical style from song to song, however, people view him far differently than Fall Out Boy due to the generation he became popular. Pete Wentz's poetry falls from the lips and into music in a way I cannot describe while Patrick's voice gives it still another meaning. It appears to me that if you took the time to listen to lyrics such as these:

You want apologies, Girl, you might hold your breath, until your breathing stops forever, forever. The only thing you'll get is this curse on your lips: I hope they taste of me forever.

Or

Why don't you show me a little bit of spine, You've been saving for his mattrerss. I only want sympathy in the form of you, crawling into the bed with me.

Or even

We're traveled like gypsies only with worse luck and far  less gold we're the kids you used to love but then we grew old we're the lifers here til the bitter end condemned from the start ashamed of the way the songs and the words beating in our hearts

These lyrics speak in a way that can only be explained by truly listening to them, and appreciating them on the whole.

The Bad- Fall Out Boy does sound a little too poppy, and they don't seem to have much of a grasp on anything above the poetry in the prose. The band isn't phenomenal when it comes to musical composition, but to be honest, this is something lacking in music on the whole this day in age.

I highly recommend spending a little more time with Fall Out Boy versus dismissing them as just another shitty pop punk band.

I really agree. lyricly FOB is a fantatic band. But I would just like to point out that, in personal expierience as a guitar player, Fall out Boy songs contain at least 5 chords per song. Wentz and Stump are a perfect team. Wentz's lyrics have significant meanings and Stump's voice really brings them out.

i couldn't agree more. i originally wrote these guys off as another cookie-cutter pop-punk group, but the truth of the matter is that this record is GOOD. yes, it's catchy, but since when was that a bad thing? i would bet that many people would be pleasantly surprised at this album (and the band's others) if they gave them a chance.

This wasn't their best albums, however, it was one that I assumed most people had heard a song from at least. I tend to prefer the earlier stuff like Grand Theft Autumn and Homesick at Space Camp. Its great to see people learn about the band from one of its more popular albums and work backwards and forwards to learn about them. I think lyrically they're almost genius.

I love it when there's a different perspective of a band that others love to hate on. I can't say I love Fall Out Boy, but I do like your showing us a popular topic from a different angle. Something tells me you might like @DJRossstar's music reviews, like this one of Green Day: http://www.lunch.com/data/Pickin_on_Green_Da...2.html_Record-4532.html

Oddly enough DJRossstar is how I ended up at this site in the first place. He's a great guy.
