Cheap Dating with Goldstar

  • Jul 19, 2009
  • by
Here's the deal.  My longtime girlfriend and I broke up in January of 2007 and I don't really like doing things by myself.  Long story short, I date a lot.

In Los Angeles, dating can get expensive.  I now have a significant JD budget line-item for specifically for dating.  Any money that I can save is of the utmost importance.  Unfortunately, grabbing some In-N-Out and then a long walk doesn't cut it for the SoCal gals.  So what's a guy to do?  Well, get thee browser to Goldstar's website.  Seriously.

When I first learned about the site, I wasn't that excited.  I had seen discount ticket sites before, so my reaction to a new one was slightly more excited than a yawn...slightly.  If you reacted the same way and are still reading this only because you are entertained by the turmoil of my romantic life, please pay attention.

I think Goldstar is great for the following reasons:

  • Ideas - they have stuff on there that I didn't KNOW about.
  • Easy - it's one-stop with reviews of the events
  • REAL Events - This is important, I use the word REAL to mean that these are discounts to things that people actually want to DO!
  • Price - um...duh.  If you can impress for less, why wouldn't you?
Let's go in order, things are easier that way.

For those of you out there who don't know...coffee for a first date is LAME.  I'm gonna go ahead and say what needs to be said.  Starbucks can sue me if they want to, but a coffee date is horrible.  "Well JD, what do you suggest?"  I'm glad you asked, because frankly, I normally wouldn't have a clue, but now I use Goldstar.

Did you know that there are Sunset Cocktail Cruises and Brunch Cruises and Dinner-Dance Cruises in Marina Del Rey?  I didn't, but now I do.  I bet you didn't know there is a murder mystery dinner at El Cid where the food is actually good and the murder mystery acting won't make you wish you were the victim.  Want more?  How about salsa dance lessons, baking lessons, wine camp, a "culture tour" at an art museum.  These are all ideas that will make you appear to be all that she's looking for.  It's your job not to disappoint her later.

OK, so there are all of these events and you have a date for Friday and another for Saturday and you're thinking about taking your waitress from last Saturday's date out on Sunday.  No problem.  You can take them all on very different dates, but you don't have to go to separate websites.  You can buy all of the tickets from Goldstar.  BONUS - she won't know that you got the dealio since you don't have to show a coupon or discount card or give some super secret decoder password.

Before you decide on your final itinerary, take a moment to read some reviews, cuz yeah, they got those too.  Dating is bad enough, you don't want the venue to add to the horror.

I don't want to take a lady date to the 2nd Annual Cotton Candy Festival.  Not that I don't think it would be "sweet" (sorry...had to do it), but what mate-worthiness is there in that?  Goldstar gets you hooked up with REAL stuff that you actually WANT to do.

Examples?  You are a tough customer, but here goes:

Spamalot.  This Broadway smash hit has landed in Los Angeles at the Ahmanson downtown.  Goldstar's got tickets...at a discount (see Prices section below).  Women love musicals, guys usually like the low brow comedy of Monty Python so it's win-win!

The Chicago Cubs are coming to play the Dodgers and I just met a cutie from ChiTown.  Actually, I haven't met a cutie from ChiTown, but if I did....woah.

Oh yeah, this is how it all started.  This is what makes Goldstar so special and an important part of my romantic life.

Remember Spamalot from like, just up the page?  Well, this is a hot show in Los Angeles right now.  Full Price = $65-$90.  Goldstar price = $32.50-$45!

Remember the Cubbies?  Full price $28-$75.  Goldstar = $20-$42

The romantic dinner-dance cruise in Marina del Rey?  Full = $77.95.  Goldstar = $53

The Murder Mystery?  Full price = $49.  Goldstar = $31

Take all of those savings and multiply x 2.  Nice dealio, eh?

The bottom line is...well, the bottom line.  Get easy access and a great price on a great idea for something that you actually want to do.  Get to Goldstar and sign up for the weekly emails to keep you in the loop.  Then go to Goldstar and make stuff happen.  I can't tell you how to GET the dates, you're on your own for that step.  Once you do get a date, get to Goldstar and make it a memorable one.  The next date might be your "one".  Even if she isn't, women talk, so this is good for your social marketing.  If you're married, use Goldstar for date-night!

Sign up and be one of my peeps over there, because YES, they have a social networking aspect too.
Heck, maybe we'll double date.  Sign up and be my peeps instantly by clicking this link:  www.goldstar.com/join

Wow Jeff, a really great review, you made me laugh! I just love your writing style! I'll have to give this a try for my hubby and I when we resume our date nights - 5 month old in the house :)

Also for a great date you should check out Dance Downtown, this is an even better deal because it is free! The above paired with a dinner at Addi's Tandoor sounds great!

Monsters of Shamisen Show
I have used Goldstar for a number of years to find differents local events to attend for a reasonable price.  I found out about this website at a theatrical presentation of Singing in the Rain at the Cerritos Performing Arts Center.  I paid full price for my seats at the box office, but the people seated next to us paid half price through Goldstar!    You can find all kinds of mainstream and ecclectic events available on this site.  In addition to finding good …

Goldstar.com - if you haven't signed up for it already, what are you waiting for?       For one, the site gives you plenty of ideas on activities that you wouldn't have thought of otherwise. Comedy acts, random sporting events, plays, local tourist attractions. The activities run the gamut and are perfect for planning some fun days/nights on the town!      Occasionally, you will find an event not to be missed.       I …
