A violent song about Manic Paranoia on top 40 radio?

It's kind of wierd to see such a song get played on top 40 stations over and over. It's a very well thought out, cinematic, character driven story intended to be a concept song about manic depressive paranoia.

Scareface raps about how his character can't sleep at night and keeps having anxiety attacks. Later we find out that his life has a dealer has brought about a existential crisis. Willie D is a hustler on the street that seems to have everything living "by the sword", but then as a car follows him he tells us about his delusional paranoia. Bushwick seems to be a schizophrenic living on the streets and it is a haunting prediction for what street life can do to a person's pysche. It really is a poignant look at how lonely and desperate it can get on the streets.

The song is morbid. it's done so smoothe.  It can easily be made into a full film. The verses play like Donald Goines' street tales. They did a great job of just looping a part of Isaac Hayes' "Hung up on my Baby", and I think this song is now more popular than Mr. Hayes. The drum programming is simply perfect. All 3 of the Geto Boys do a great job on their flow and the rhyme structure of their verses.

Check out another song Geto Boys made much after this song called "Time Taker". It really feels like a sequel to "Mind Playin' Tricks" where we get to visit the same characters much later in life.  I  love songs that tell stories like this. Great story telling, we need more of this in mass media.I remember how evil cenors tried to keep this off the air. I'm glad they failed.

Not my genre for music...but interesting. Revisiting characters in a later song sounds conceptually intriguing.
