Detroit Red Wings versus Chicago Blackhawks Game 4

As a Michigan transplant living in Chicago, I am a little torn sometimes about my sports. Not torn as in who to root for, because no matter where I live I will always stay true to my hometown teams, but torn because it would be so much more fun to root for a team in a city that you lived in so you could enjoy all the festivities around town.  Chicago is a great sports town, but I can't get into the local teams here, mostly because all the pro teams are bitter rivals of the Detroit teams, since they are all in the same division in each sport.

That being said, I am excited that the Chicago Blackhawks are a revised franchise and have made it so far in the playoffs.  I was at the Boundry in Bucktown when the 'Hawks beat Vancouver for a trip to the Western Conference Finals. The bar patrons went nuts and it was fun to be part of the environment, and for that moment I was happy for Chicago. But I was thinking about the next matchup to come.

Fast forward to Game 4. The Wings had dropped one at the United Center and there was the controversey surrounding the Kronwall hit (totally legal btw!).  It was an important game because it the Wings won, they had it in the bag.  If the 'Hawks won, then they had hope and we were looking at a long series. I wanted the Wings to win so they could get their starters healthy for the Cup finals. Once the first period was over, I knew the Wings had this one. Their poise, confidence and all out man-handling of the Blackhawks was impressive. The Blackhawks showed their age and inexperience and most notably, the glaring difference of who is the better team.

Good for Chicago for bringing hockey back.  But just like how it was for the MJ Bulls of the 90s, in order to be legitamite, you have to beat the best team. Chicago showed fight, but they aren't quite there yet.

Good Review! You should do a write-up on the Detroit Pistons. I can only imagine what you will have to say:) At least Chicago has a decent chance with their pro-sports teams and a fun crowd rooting for them. MN professional sport teams basically make me want to cry!

Poor Detroit is on the receiving end of a lot of bad things these days. It's the most impoverished city in the country. It's the most violent city in the country. The housing crisis there is so nasty that houses are actually being sold for considerably less than cars, with some of them going for around $10,000. Yet, though it all, the people of Detroit can go down to their waterfront to visit Joe Louis Arena for an escape in NHL hockey, where they get the pleasure of watching the Detroit Red Wings. …
