Whats the Japanese word for "more of the same and not nearly as good?"

  • Oct 26, 2010

The first Ai Yori Aoshi was a cute, sometimes romantic often contrived little show about a young man meeting his arranged wife and seeing each other as much as they can under hard circumstances.  A follow up series you would hope would keep the cute episodes and romance and make it even better.  Not this show.

Having been a fan of the first show, watching it with a friend of mine I saw that this was being released and was excited.  My favorite thing about the first show was the romance when they could make it happen and having wrapped up most of the issues in the first show as to why Kaoru and Aoi couldn't see each other, you would hope there would be more romance and relationship issues.  There AREN'T.  The show is still sticking with the premise that Aoi is the manager of the house Kaoru is staying in with THE SAME girls from the previous season.  The gang still has the same fun adventures but NOTHING is advanced.

All the same characters from the first show are back.  Man Kaoru, Woman Aoi, all the tenants from obnoxious American Tina, shy Taeko, and the others.  Whats more....Chika Chan the plucky island girl from the first season who was introduced at the end of the season gets A LOT of screen time and some episodes are devoted to her FRIENDS?!  Why do I give 3 squirts about Chika let alone her FIRENDS?!  I care about Aoi and Kaoru and seeing them try to start a life together in this show, not all the tenants and THEY'RE FRIENDS!

I honestly don't remember anything from this show other then a Christmas episode from one of the DVDs.  It was cute but ultimately pointless, but Aoi's parting words made me cry a little.

The voice acting is fine and I didn't really notice anything bad other then Wendee Lee doing Tina's voice.  Maybe it's cause I just don't like Tina, but all the principal characters are back.

Emotionally, let me say this.  I am not a big romantic film or show buff short of the occasional romantic comedy.  The first season of this show really made me care about the characters of Aoi and Kaoru.  Seeing them interact and talk and that Aoi was in love with Kaoru to the point she would leave her vast and rich life behind to live with Kaoru until fate intervenes and brings them back to Aoi's house under a watchful eye.  You REALLY want to see them get together.  After a few false starts and teases in the first show, the season wrapped up with a lot of problems resolved but this seasons goes no further.  Didn't the creators know that I want to invest in the two main characters and not the supplemental ones?

HERE is the real kicker.  How does this show end?  SPOILER  Is it Aoi losing her money and having her and Kaoru moving back into his tiny apartment?  Does Kaoru get killed saving Aoi's life?  How about the two live happily ever after?  None of those:  TINA might move back to America!?!?!  WHO CARES!?!?!?  Yes I get it, Tina is a friend and she wants to stay in Japan....but TINA isn't the focus of the show!

The negative 2 is for a show that I looked forward to, to continue it's story and not stick with more of the same, introduce more characters I didn't care about and not give me a finale that struck me as bizzare.  The season as it stands isn't awful since there was some fun here and there but really, theres more of the same and then theres just being lame and it overshadowed what was good.  I only hope a third season is planned to get this show the proper ending that it needs but with my luck it'll conclude with Taeko needing money for a breast reduction instead of something about....oh I don't know the characters the show is supposed to be about.

It sounds like something I will wait on, but did I read that it made you cry?

Yes, in the Christmas episode on the first DVD, Aoi says something to Kaoru at the end of the episode that did make me cry a little.

Hmm...sounds interesting but I think I'll hold off. I just have so much anime on my plate now. Nice review!

You can definetly hold off, the first series is worth seeing once, and then only consider seeing this one. This was a dissapointment.

Second season of Ai Yori Aoshi has EVEN MORE secondary characters, forgettable episodes, doesn't further the story and ends badly. Yeah, it kinda sucks.
