A small budget "Thor" movie - kind a different - kind of good

When i was viewing the first 20 minutes of this movie i thought it was so bad i said to myself; "good grief! - if i continue to watch this i may actually suffer brain damage - they have to be kidding".

But by the end despite its flaws and small budget i thought Almighty Thor was just kind of strange (that is, 'different'), fun and even interesting. No brain damage!! Of course this is coming from someone who thinks the movie: "Lord Protector - The Riddle of the Chosen", is great stuff! Maybe it was just to late for me after watching that. lol!

In this movie Thor loses it all - first he loses his family (father, brother), finds a girlfriend, that is a lady (Járnsaxa) who befriends him, they kind of turn out to be souls mates, loses her - and on top (excuse the pun) of all this he loses his hammer and winds up in hell. Talk about hitting bottom!  Instead of Almighty Thor, maybe the movie should have been called Almighty Loser!

As you might imagine Thor (a god remember in Norse mythology, no less than "Almighty Thor" titled in this movie) comes across a bit confused and upset. Considering what happens in this story - i say, yeah, no kidding! But that's what makes this movie interesting and different. "Almighy Thor" dosen't seem that almighy. Also what makes it fun and different is that it takes place then (in a mythic past) and now (2011) in a modern american city.

The chemistry between Cody Deal as Almighty Thor and Patricia Velásquez as Járnsaxa (who was second in command of the Valkyrie - a character of some mystery) is very well done.

I like that this b-movie has tongue-in-cheek quality yet tells of a "Almighty Thor" that is all too human in a good way. Thor learns the importance of wisdom and something about himself, makes a new hammer (from the truth found within), destroys "fate" and conquers the delusions/illusions of Loki who, here looks like a drug addicted punk rocker in black leather. But its not any drug Loki is addicted to, but power and control, i.e. the "hammer".  Loki  wants to destroy and remake the world in his own image and likeness.  Loki wants what isn't his - Thor's Hammer and the World. Ironically Thor at one point in the movie takes Loki's 'magic wand' to get what he wants (his father's life back) but it dosen't work.  Thor gives up that kind of power and control (illusion) and destroys the old hammer that Loki stole, and renews the world thereby.

The makers of this movie are in a way 'kidding' around with "Almighty Thor" here, but in a playful, oddball and nevertheless interesting way.

Not rated - but i would give it a PG rating.

Hi, Gary. Long time, no talk. It's interesting that a Valkyrie is played by someone named Velasquez. I just saw the new CONAN and I wish I'd had as much fun watching that as you had watching this. In lots of ways it's better than Arnie's first Conan flick (Arnie's not in it for one thing which would help out any movie), but the camera work and frenzied editing makes most of the action/fight scenes almost impossible to watch. Plus they've completely removed the "code of honor" that Howard gave Conan. The stuff he does in the flick Conan would never have done to his worst enemy. sigh.
