As Time Goes By - The Best Sitcom EVER!

  • Dec 30, 2009
  • by
"As Time Goes By" is an old BBC sitcom that you NEED to watch. It's funny, heartwarming, and candid. The characters are a bit too witty at times but the entire story line and each episode plot are incredibly strong. This show absolutely puts American sitcoms to shame. I don't know of an American television show better than this. You'll be hooked from the first episode.

Not sure if you can rent this at Blockbusters or anyother local video rental shop, but it's best if you just take on a Netflix memebership and watch use their "Instant Watch" feature. If you don't already have a Netflix membership, "As Time Goes By" makes it worth buying one. Netflix has every episode from the seriies. Do watch it! I've watched the entire series about 5 times and I can never get enough of it.

About this tv show

This sweet-natured British situation comedy proved beyond doubt that there is no statute of limitations on romance. Army officer Lionel Hardcastle (Geoffrey Palmer) and nurse Jean Parteger (Judi Dench) lost touch with one another after their brief affair in 1953. Flash-forward to 1991. Now an author of musty geographical books, Lionel was unexpectedly reunited with Jean, who had gone into business for herself as the owner of a secretarial service. It took some doing, but the caustic, imperious Lionel and the rigid, immutable Jean finally realized that they'd known one another (in the Biblical sense) way back when. It also took some doing for these two diametrical opposites to admit that they were still passionately in love, In the course of As Time Goes By's nine seasons, two other romances transpired: One involved Jean's daughter Judith (Moira Brooker) and Lionel's publisher Alistair (Philip Bretherton); the other, which didn't really take off until the series had practically run its course, involved Jean's employee Sandy (Jenny Funnell) and a police officer named Harry (David Michaels). Also in the cast were Frank Middlemass as Lionel's boisterous father Rocky and Joan Sims as Rocky's new bride Madge. Weighing in at 65 episodes, As Time Goes By originally aired on the BBC from 1992 to 2002 and has since been seen in the United States courtesy of PBS. ~ All Movie Guide Close
