America's Favorite Serial Killer

I was introduced to the series by my boyfriend when we first started dating, and have been hooked ever since! Based on the novel "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" by Jeff Lindsay, Dexter is a colorful mix of drama, suspense, horror, and comedy. The television series doesn't follow the novel word for word, but it does do a great job of developing the characters, and though some scenarios are totally different than the book's, you would expect the characters to behave in those certain ways anyway, so it really works quite well.

One of the main reasons I love this show is the main character, Dexter Morgan, played by actor Michael C. Hall. Dexter reminds me of myself in a lot of ways. (Not the whole serial killer part of his character, mind you!) During the day, he works as a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Police Department. He is thought of as a quiet, reserved, intelligent, and private individual. No one would ever suspect him of having the bizarre secrets that he does. I think that is what really makes the show work...this could be anybody, in any workplace around the world, and nobody would realize it! The other side of his personality, which he refers to as his "dark passenger", is that of a serial killer - but not just any random evil-doer - he works by a code. Dexter does not kill the innocent. He will only go after criminals who have taken innocent lives...if there were such a thing as a "Just Killer", Dexter would be it. In his mind, he is helping society by taking out the scum of the city in a quicker, more efficient manner than the MPD could ever accomplish.

I do have to put out a quick warning to the queasy crowd out there: Dexter is rated R, for violence, graphic scenes, language, and some nudity. I wouldn't recommend this show for children. This is a show geared towards open-minded adults who enjoy shows like CSI and who laugh at  good horror flicks. The popularity of the show is tremendous, and there were even cities around the country that filled their fountains in their public parks with red-colored water in order to promote the premiere! That is just truly cool!

If this sounds like your cup of tea, I really hope you'll take the time to check out Dexter. I guarantee you won't be disappointed! For more information on the show, you can go to the official Dexter homepage, located at http://www.sho.com/site/dexter/home.do. Enjoy!

How can you not get hooked? Blood spatter analyst by day, serial killer by night.

Wonderfully original idea for tv-- serial killer works as a blood splatter expert for the cops by day & kills evil doers in his spare time.

When my brother first told me the premise of Dexter, I thought there was no way I'd be a fan. I'd rather do my laundry than a watch serial killer's dirty work. But one night I was bored, and it was on and of course I watched. I haven't stopped since. Dexter is a dark character, whose "code" (he only kills killers) keeps him from running amuck in a world of law and order (or in his case the police station where he works).  Though his madness should make you dislike him, his strangely lovable. …

About this tv show

Dexter Morgan, played by Michael Hall, is the main character of this Showtime TV series. The show focuses on the life of Dexter who is a serial killer.

The series blends drama and horror as it follows the day-to-day events in the life of Dexter Morgan, a forensic blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department who also happens to be a serial killer. He was taught by his adoptive father, Harry, only to kill those "who deserve it"; mainly, other killers who have escaped the legal system or were never suspected in the first place. The series shows him balancing an everyday life with his secret identity, all while keeping up a facade of normalcy.
