If you love music and music parodies... you gotta check them out.

"The Flight of The Conchords" is a unique TV show on HBO that is starting to get really mainstream.  It's about a novelty band of the same name who are trying to make a living as musicians in New York.  It's a comedy that is really about the quirky characters, and their (usually silly and unique) music which parodies different musical genres.  In a nutshell, it's like a fake reality show about "Weird Al" except that it's about the group "Flight of the Conchords".  The group had a cult following before the show (they used to travel around and do live shows... well, they still do actually), but are now getting the spotlight since the TV show has totally taken off.

The show is very hard to describe ...but it's a bit like "Seinfield" but with random funny music videos inserted into the episodes.  The first Season is hilarious and is a "must see" for music fans.  They are currently finishing up the Second Season of the show on HBO... and my opinion is that it's not really as funny as the First Season. Hence, I gave the show 4 instead of 5 stars.   If I was just rating the First Season... I'd give it 5 stars without hesitation.  Because it's odd and quirky... it may or may not be your cup of tea.  It's one of those shows whether you'll either love or hate and you'll either laugh until it hurts or you won't get the jokes.

Season 1 of the show is available on DVD now.   Season 2 is currently running on HBO.  Two Albums with the music from the show are also available.  For those of you who already know of them, The Flight of The Conchords Band is on Live Tour now.

You should definitely check it out if you:

-Have ever been in a band or have friends in a band

-Like Weird Al or Music Parodies/Novelity bands in general

-Like Silly comedies like Monty Python or British Comedy (no, FOTC is not British... They're from New Zealand)

-A huge music fan of many genres.

Love this show and this review is very well written. Good job! Whenever I need something that will make me shed tears of joy and have my tummy hurting from laughter I watch 'Rhymnocerous vs Hiphopopotumus' or 'Sugalumps!'

Ahh, you beat me to the punch of reviewing this show! But you wrote what was on my mind! I agree that Flight of the Conchords is hard to "get" at first, and it took me about five episodes before I started laughing — and singing — along. My favorite song? "Mutha*ukas" is pretty good.

This show is the kind of show that you'll know whether or not you like after the first episode. It will either instantly resonate with you and your sense of humor... or you may not get it. It has a quirky (dorky) sense of humor and hilarious music video-like segments inserted into the episodes. It's perfect for us folks that grew up in the 80s, or folks that just love music in general. It's almost like "Seinfeld meets Weird Al". The cool thing about their music is that the songs aren't parodies …

"The Flight of the Conchords"    Over the Top    Amos Lassen    I came across the two DVD set of "The Flight of the Conchords" quite by accident and I am so glad I did. I really needed a good laugh and I got more than expected. This set in the first season of the HBO series and as usual the cable channel has kept its reputation high The two guys, Jermaine Lement and Bret McKenzie who are known as Flight of the Conchord are New Zealanders, …

About this tv show

Flight of the Conchords is a real novelty musical band who have a HBO TV show based on them.   The show is currently in it's second season on HBO.

Unlike most HBO series,Flight of the Conchordsdoes not want to set the world on fire. It is droll and deadpan to beat the band. If you like Tenacious D, They Might Be Giants, Jonathan Richman,Leningrad Cowboys Go America, and silly Pythonian wordplay, then its off-center charms will definitely strike a resonant chord. The Conchords are comprised of funky, funny folk duo Bret McKenzie and mutton-chopped Jemaine Clement, transplanted New Zealanders trying to make it in New York. Bret, their incompetent manager, Murray (Rhys Darby) notes, has "the right attitude," while Jemaine has "what I like to call, 'the wrong attitude.'" (Murray, who works out of the New Zealand consulate, makes the clueless agent inExtraslook like Ari Gold.) Stardom eludes the band. They have one fan, Mel (Kristin Schaal), whose seething husband chaperones her while she stalks them (by season's end, even she will desert them). Financially strapped, they live in squalor and are forced to film a music video with a cell-phone camera. The dense Jemaine is a damper on Bret's love life (he derisively calls Coco, Bret's new girlfriend, "Yoko"). But from their mundane lives springs their inspired music, and it is during each episode's musical numbers thatConchordsreally takes flight. Sample lyrics: ...
