Kidou Senshi Gundam 00 Season 2: just when things are looking down

The first season ender for Gundam 00 was pretty much on the shocking side, considering this is the first time Sunrise ever cut a Gundam series in the middle, going for season 1 and 2 respectively with 25 episodes for each. Add to that the fact that all the Gundam pilots seem to have died in the end, well, waiting for the next installment probably made a lot of fans squirm impatiently.

The second season didn't disappoint, on the whole. Starting with a new world four years after what happened in season 1, we see the trademark facade of peace recurrent in other Gundam series and the brute force the federation exerts in maintaining that peace. Celestial Being gets resurrected when Setsuna F Seiei joins their ranks once more, now piloting Gundam 00 which is even better than Exia even after TransAm.

I like the way the characters were made to look older in this new season. Setsuna, who's something of a shrimp when the show started, is now 21 years old, taller and remarkably more mature than we remember him from the start. Several characters have also developed admirably, one of them Tierie Erde, who'd loosened his breeches a bit to call Setsuna by his first name and even talk to people once in a while. Things brought out from the past explain what made these characters tick in the first place.

The animation is good, although personally I prefer the first season's look to this one. On the other hand, the mobile suits in the second season are really over the top amazing (if sometimes unmindful of the laws of physics). Details not usually bothered with, like the difference of operating systems and controls between different mobile suits and how hard it is to steal one from the other group, is brought up to a very nice, realistic effect.
