SO, You Think You Can Dance? I Can't, but They Most Definitely Can!
Jun 15, 2009
When I used to go to sleep away camp as a young lad, I used to to join the dance team when we had color wars. I had a lot of fun doing it, but that doesn't mean I can dance now. I never thought about it as something I would pursue, but I always had an admiration for really good dancers. My cousin used to take me to the Philadelphia Ballet every year to see The Nutcracker and I always looked forward to it. When I first heard about a Dance show that was coming onto the television by the same folks who made American Idol (which I loath), I had doubts, but when I watched the first episode of So You Think You Can Dance, I was hooked. Since then I have watched every season of the show.
So You Think You Can Dance starts out every year with six rounds of auditions in various cities. There you get to see some really amazing dancers, some of which will become your favorites and some dancers who need to go home and re-think their lives (for example, Sex, a dancer who has made himself a bit of a celebrity coming back year after year with his mother only to get ridiculed by judge and creator Nigel Lythgoe for just wanting attention). The way to move on from these auditions is by wowing the judges into giving the dancer a ticket to the Las Vegas round of the show, weeding out the great dancers from the good. Once in Vegas, the dancers who won their way there will be put through endless hours of choreography until finally from around 180, the Top 20 dancers will be picked to appear on the television show.
Never have I seen a reality show that keeps you on the edge of your seat like So You Think You Can Dance. The show is such a treat to watch as you get to experience these great dance numbers and see these dancers work so hard. I never have watched a show where I actually clap at the TV like I'm in the audience, that's how fun this show is. Obviously the dancers are the heart of the show, but the choreographers are their life line and they come up with some amazing work. For example, Tabitha and Napoleon, a couple who specialize in hip-hop, have come up with some of the best routines on the show, like Katie and Joshuas "No Air" routine or last weeks routine with Jeanine and Phillip, both videos below. Those dances are just a taste of what you get on So You Think You Can Dance.
Last year, they added Bollywood routines to the show, which was probably one of the best decisions the producers ever made as the crowd and the television audiences love it. The best part about it (besides the dancing) is that they have these amazing costumes to go along with the great routines. This years Bollywood (only week 1 mind you) routine is my favorite so far, choreographed by Nakul Dev Mahajan, Caitlin and Jason dance to "Jai Ho" from Slumdog Millionaire. These routines have been the best part of the show and without these great choreographers, there would be no show.
The only issue I have with the show is the second nights elimination show. Every Thursday after the dancers perform on Wednesday, three couples are chosen for possible elimination. Throughout the hour, these dancers must "dance for their lives" and then two of the dancers who were not that good are eliminated. What gets tedious about this is that the hour is filled with sub par guest dancer routines or musical performances. I would much rather this show be half an hour and get the eliminating out of the way so we can move onto next week.
That being said, So You Think You Can Dance is the best reality show on television. If you love dancing or just love watching people dance, this is the show for you. If you have a good idea of who might be eliminated, it might be best to skip the Thursday show as it is truly boring. So You Think You Can Dance airs Wednesdays from 8-10PM Eastern on FOX and the elimination show is on Thursdays at 9PM. Remember to vote for your favorite dancers so they don't get kicked off! 5/5!
I cannot tell you guys how ECSTATIC I am that So You Think You Can Dance is here. Every Wednesday and Thursday at 8p, I put everything away and glue myself to Fox for my favorite post-Idol addiction. I have loved dancing all my life. As someone who watches others for dancing inspiration, this show has made me a better dancer. I am a freestyle dancer- one who mixes all different styles to go along with whatever song is playing. This show finds some way to combine all the beauty of dance into a couple … more
