I still maintain my firm belief that the judges did not pick the best top 12 female singers compared to previous seasons. I do admit to being shocked by how much better the women were compared to their male counterparts (I watched the 12 male contestants sing before watching this older episode).
First, this episode began in a more engaging manner. I didn't understand the reason for moving Ellen to the other side of the judge's table, but I did enjoy the joke behind it. The inappropriate video was hilarious. It really started the show off with a great tone. Second, I found the judge's critiques about the singers more useful than the advice they gave for the men on Thursday. Finally, I was just all around impressed with the singing. It still wasn't amazing, but it was sure better than I gave this group credit for.
There were some pleasant surprises, such as Michelle Delamor's "Fallen" and Ashley Rodriguez's song "Happy." Neither one could compare with the original artists who sang the songs, Alicia Keyes and Leona Lewis, but they were not as bad as I thought they would be. Lilly Scott's rendition of "Fixing a Hole" by the Beatles was also interesting.
Despite some of the highlights, there were many disappointing performances. Janelle Wheeler's "All about Love" fell short. I love that song, but I couldn't stand her performance. I also didn't enjoy Katie Stevens' "Feeling Good" song. Some of the performances fell flat simply because I don't like the singers, such as Haeley Vaughn and Katelyn Epperly. Overall, most of the singers blend together as far as their vocal qualities and ranges of singing.
The dark horse who came out of nowhere is Crystal Bowersox (24 years old). She is my favorite female singer, and I look forward to hearing more of her unique voice and tone in future episodes.
In the end, I enjoyed these performances more than the top 12 male singers, although there were more confusing parts about this episode. For example, why was Paige Miles sewn into her outfit? She was explaining over the fact that she had to go to the bathroom, or something, when Seacrest was giving out her telephone number. It was a confusing part of the show and probably gave the audience more information than we wanted about her discomfort.
Here is the full lineup of all the contestants and what they sang for this episode. I included as much information as I remembered:
