Disappointing after a great first season

The first season of True Blood hooked me from the start and made me excited to watch a vampire based tv series for the first time since Dark Shadows went off the air in1971.  I looked forward to a an equally enjoyable second season and was greatly disappointed.  The first season had stuck with a few main topics (vampires fighting for equal rights, Sookie's personal issues and the murder mystery).  The second season lost me from the first episode.  As the weeks went on it got more ridiculous and things did not seem to be back to normal until the last 15 minutes of the last episode.

What killed it was too much going on (the Mary Ann thing, the Church of the Sun, the Vampire kidnapping, the Sookie/Bill Erik face-off), too much silliness, too many different creatures and ridiculous characters (Andy, the Vampire Queen, Mary Ann, Jason to name a few). 

I do remember the great first season of the Sopranos and the rest of the series never reached that quality except for a handful of episodes.  I hope that True Blood doesn't follow the same path.  The third season has a hint of a battle between Bill and Eric over Sookie and we last saw Bill getting kidnapped as the cliffhanger ending.

Suggestions to the writers.  Keep the series to a two or three main themes.  Don't try to introduce too many supernatural characters or human with wierd powers all at the same time.  Try to keep the campiness out of the characters.  Keep the vampires as the focus of the supernatural portion.  Have more vamps like Gadrick and less like the Queen.

I was genuinely and pleasantly surprised by the second season of True Blood. While the series does get sillier and more over-the-top with the introduction of other supernatural beings, it manages to ground the storylines in human (figuratively speaking) drama. My main issue with season two is the story arc about Maryann, which I felt was never believable and her character and the developments surrounding her were just too distancing from Bill and Sookie's relationship and the civil rights issues.   …

I liked True Blood: The Complete Second Season (HBO Series)  a lot more than the first season. There was more action and the plot was intense. I'm ready for season 3 now:)

True Blood Season One is like the cake. True Blood Season Two is the delicious icing on that cake! You must see Season One before Season Two or you wont understand the storyline. BTW...Season Three is AMAZING!

True Blood Season 2

Season two focused heavily on the relationship between Sookie Stackhouse and her vampire boyfriend Bill.  The anti-vampire church, The Fellowship of the Sun was one of the major plots during the season as well.  Maryann Forrester was one of the bigger stories for season 2, as she takes over the town of Bon Temps.
