UPDTAE: I was getting a horrible clicking sound from the DVD drive when this disc first started up. I upgraded the firmware and the clicking sound went away.
I had a hard time finding online a review/statement that said if the XBox 360 controller hooked up to the PC would work well with this game: it does. I still have to use 'z' for prone and 'j' for drop weapon, but just about everything else can be found on the controller. And before they say it: YES, most hardcore gamers could/do use the keyboard and perform certain functions faster than the XBox controller.
I did, however, find that flying the VTOL was much more responsive and easier with the keyboard.
Walking is slow, and sprinting is the equivalent of what walking should be. A hack for this and other traits is possible.
A lot of effort was put into the environment and the little things you tend to find here and there. I didn't find it too repetitive or blocky, though others may disagree.
More effort should have put into the the hit points and hit areas for the enemy. What I found: - head shots do not always kill an enemy (aside from the sniper rifle), - some enemy can take up to three or four clips of ammo to bring down, whereas the guy next to him goes down with a shot to the chest. Those that wear a beret or camo head gear take more shots to bring down, sometimes up to a dozen head shots, - shooting the back of the head is nowhere near as effective as the face,
There is also some missing AI when it comes to you slowly walking up to a group of enemy in the pitch dark: they always see you coming, even if their back is turned. Not very realistic. You have to prone-crawl your way up to them in order to hide, or use the cloak. Basically, you could be 100 yards from the enemy in near-total darkness and they always have a bead on you, even if you are in heavy brush or behind a rock.
You could be prone in the middle of a wide dirt path in daylight and they would walk right by you.
The vehicles are nerfed quite a bit. Keyboard is easier to maneuver them. Better vehicle controls in Halo 1+2 with the controller than in this game.
The helicopters are way more durable than they need to be. An rpg can demolish a building, but do nothing to a helo? It takes two shoulder rockets to bring down a helo, and a glancing blow does not count, it has to be dead on. In one part, the doors open on a helo and you can launch a rifle grenade or throw one inside it and that will do the trick, but shooting a grenade at the underside does nothing.
The jellyfish-looking alien things are kind of lame, enough said there.
BLOCKING INTERNET REQUESTS: Yes, you can block the game from connecting with EA and nothing will happen to your game. I use AVG, and have chosen to permanently block the game's request to access EA -- no problems with the game. I say this because some have written that you have to have an Internet connection to use the game... not so.
So, a lot has been put into the environment of the game, but some realistic interaction could be improved upon.
