King of Survival Horror gets a Shiny Facelift!

Resident Evil gave the horror survival genre life in 1996. I don't know if it was the first horror game, but it made itself the staple for all future games in the genre. It is still known as a classic across the world today, and what better way to show it than remaking it. Capcom and Nintendo made a deal in which Capcom would make ports of the series on their console. The original RE was too outdated, and Capcom had the chance to push the Gamecube's graphical power into overdrive. There is so much detail in character and lighting, RE is one of the best looking games for the system--besides perhaps RE 4, but that will be a later review. The first thing you will notice is a nicer looking opening cinematic (although the live action bit from the original can't be beat). Another thing you will catch from the beginning is the difference on the looks and voice acting of the S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics and Rescue Service) members. For those of you who are not familiar with the plot, S.T.A.R.S. are like Raccoon City's S.W.A.T. pretty much. S.T.A.R.S. are sent to the mountains near the city to discover what has been murdering citizens in the area. They are attacked by zombie dogs known as Cerberus, and they proceed to take shelter in a mansion according to their leaders advice. Your main character, either Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield, two members of S.T.A.R.S. bravo team, is sent by leader Albert Wesker to find the character that you did not choose. You are sent to investigate the nearest room. After finding a zombie, your character decides to report back to Wesker. You find him missing and are left alone to explore a mansion full of ravenous zombies in an effort to find your team and escape alive. I will state that this installment isn't a carbon copy of the original. There are new puzzles, paths, and enemies to add to the mix. A new featured enemy is called the Crimson Head. Crimson Heads are reanimated zombies that come back faster and stronger than before. They are given there name because of their red skin and whiteout eyes. The thing is that once a person gets infected and dies, they turn into a zombie. When you "kill" a zombie, it comes back for a third and final time as a crimson head. These are tough to kill, because the game really leans towards the "destroy the brain concept." The only way to prevent a Crimson Head is to blow a zombie's head off, or to burn them. This can become very irritating early in the game, and requires you to save bullets for more than one reason. The gameplay is still the same. Tank controls are still used, but they are so much smoother in this remake. The quick turn from Nemesis also returns for the remake too, giving you full control of Jill and Chris. The musical score of the game supplies both classic tracks, with a few new ones, mostly for the new areas of the game. Since the game is a remake, the overall story and plot of the game is exactly the same. If something isn't broken, don't fix it. However, I do not feel the difficulty is consistent. Depending on a short questionnaire at the beginning of the game, you either start the game on either easy or normal. When you beat one difficulty, you unlock them all. The highest difficulty is hard. Once you have a feel for the game, Easy becomes a pushover. Normal mode becomes too difficult too quickly for most players, although it is possible to push through. I' am a hard core gamer myself, and I dare not to play Hard mode. Speaking about beating the game, there are lots of unlockables. There are new costumes, you unlock the infinite rocket launcher by beating the game on at least normal under five hours, and there are new variants like One Dangerous Zombie mode. This mode is the same as the normal game, except there is a zombie that is strapped with a bomb that explodes upon contact, this includes shooting it. Now...I think it's time to wrap her up!

Pros
-Same story, but that is perfectly okay
-Updated, smoother controls
-Plenty of new content
-Superb graphics
-Brilliant musical score
-Infinite grenade rounds glitch = unlimited fun
-Wesker still makes being evil cool

Cons
-It is just me, or does the new Jill look too depressed and possibly gothic? Words can't describe
-Difficulty inconsistency
-Berry isn't as unnecessarily quirky this time. Why did they take the funny out?
-Crimson Heads lower your kill count

Overall, Resident Evil is still a brilliant game after all this time. If you haven't played the first entry in the series, I would recommend playing this remake. The cons are pretty minor, and the pros more than outweigh them. I give Resident Evil a brilliant 4 out of 5!

I see you finally kicked that write up out. I have to admit that I was blown away with this remake. The graphics are amazing and it was such an excellent upgrade. I been planning on replaying this for a while.

whoa, welcome back, Yoda! Glad to see you return with a review. Now that said, I've never owned a Gamecube, but I love this game franchise!

Thank you Woopak! Horror survival is one of my favorite genres, and Resident Evil is my favorite out of the bunch--although Silent Hill comes close. Speaking of which I like RE 4 and RE 5, but Capcom has not given love and support to what they started. I have only played a demo of 5, not having either a PS3 or 360. Anyway, I really like 4 and what I have seen of 5, but they lack the horror, only the survival is now left. I also don't like the buff Chris or gothic Jill. Hopefully since zombies are returning to Resident Evil 6, the game will pick back up some of its natural images from their earlier games.
