Spiderman Shattered Dimensions was developed by Beenox and published by Activision. It was released on September 7th 2010.
Shattered Dimensions follows everyone’s favorite Marvel comic’s superhero Spiderman. After a fight with the villain Mysterio the tablet of Order and Chaos is shattered into many pieces. This Causes problems to occur across multiple realities, problems Madame Web calls upon not one, not two but four different Spidermen to fix.
As Stated above in this game you play as four different spidermen, Spiderman Noir, Spiderman 2099, The Amazing Spiderman, and Ultimate Spiderman. Despite being different (in every sense of the word) they all have many things in common (apart from a witty sense of humour) like web attacks, great agility and melee attacks. Like most superhero games Shattered Dimensions has an upgrade system, using currency call Spider essence found in the environment you can upgrade, enhance or even teach Spidey new moves, attacks, finishers and even buy him new alternate suits. Spider essence can also be earned by beating bosses and smaller enemies and by finding golden spiders in the environment.
The game also features an achievement/challenge system called The Web of Destiny. Every time you start a new level the web is updated with new challenges, challenges include things like “defeat 5 enemies without touching the ground” or “break 10 pots using web pull in 30 seconds”. Some are harder than others but successfully completed challenges will earn you extra spider essence.
Graphics wise because this game takes place from the perspectives of four different Spidermen the graphics in each reality are different. In Spiderman Noir the graphics are black and white (to match the dark 1930s feel), in Amazing Spiderman the graphics are cel-shaded and have a black outline that gives them a comic book feel, In Spiderman 2099 the graphics are bright, flashy Neony and colourful, only Ultimate Spiderman has “normal” graphics. In either case the graphics all look amazing (no pun intended) Beenox did a damn fine job on the Wii version of the game. Like graphics each Spiderman has their own gameplay style, Noir features predominantly stealth gameplay, because this Spiderman doesn’t have much health hand to hand combat is not recommended, Amazing Spiderman uses more web based attack than any other of the other spidermen.
Ultimate Spiderman relies mainly on melee attacks using the brute force of the black suit, lastly Spiderman 2099 makes use of extended free fall sequences (during Boss fights) and also has accelerated vision allowing him to slow down time and dodge fast attacks. Even with all the different play styles Shattered Dimensions gameplay is still very repetitive (like No More Heroes or Power Rangers), basically you start a level, get into a verbal battle with the boss of that level, beat up a bunch of bad guys, fight the boss (who runs away close to being defeated), beat up more bad guys, (save a civilian or two), then fight the boss again but this time super powered by the Tablet fragment, beat him get your score, start another level and do it all again. Control Wise when I picked up this game I was expecting the controls to be a total nightmare, I actually dreaded playing the game. The developers nailed it, the controls were perfect they worked very well and were easy to memorize.
Some things that disappointed me with this game were some of the levels were very glitchy and full of bugs (again no pun intended) sometimes Spiderman would either get stuck in walls or fall into a bottomless pit forcing you to start over again from the last check point. Lastly the boss fights I found were also an annoyance, when close to being defeated the game will switch to first person view, at which point you will have to use the wiimote and nunchuck (like in Wii Boxing) and punch the boss till he’s defeated. While it sounds cool on paper it really isn’t cause if you don’t hit him enough one backhand or headbutt could kill you and send you right back to the beginning of the fight.
Apart from this Shattered Dimensions is a really fun game to play, the humour and dialogue is very witty, the music was amazingly well done, (I personally loved the music in the Noir levels), I was very happy with the controls, the voice acting was great, and the unlockable suits, concept art, and web of destiny system really add a bunch of replayability to this great game. Spiderman Shattered Dimensions gets 9.0 out of 10.
