There is often the debate about "Kirk vs Picard" in who is better or cooler. For the most part, I never really had an opinion. Kirk was a soldier and a man of action who wasn't afraid of getting his hands dirty to save lives and Jim did have a way with the ladies. Picard was far more refined with using violence as a last resort not to mention being a skilled diplomat to talk his way to sensible solutions. He still made some lady friends from time to time. Kirk stayed on one level throughout all the movies and his series and Picard definetely had ups and downs. The first season, Picard was far more haughty and arrogant with hardly a trace of sense of humor. It toned down in the second season and he was far more personable by the third.
Captain Picard is the main character of TNG and the one most people think of if they don't think of Data, the albino android or Geordi the blind guy with a banana clip over his face, but really it's Picard who we think of.
Picard was no nonsense and the times when he showed the audience that he took sh** from nobody really made for some awesome moments, usually cause he outsmarted his opponents with his mind. In "Symbiosis", the snooty Brekkian race has to eat some crow since they beat Picard over the head with their knowledge of the Prime Directive, but Picard by the end is able to turn the tables on them so that things may not work out so well for them. In "The Ensigns of Command" Picard has to pour over a treaty that an alien species is hitting Picard over the head with until Picard finds a way to get what he wants. The aliens find out that he's right and Picard takes delight in MAKING them wait for the answer he is expecting, "You are right." "Unification" has Picard getting the runaround from the Klingon leader who Picard helped get elected to Chancellor. Getting a hold of a lowly aide, Picard makes sure the message is loud and clear to the aide, that he wants a ship or some other Klingon politician will have Picard's back if more trouble starts up. Picard didn't need a phaser or even raise his voice in a lot of these situaitons. It's like what Tom Hagen said in The Godfather, "You can steal a lot more with a briefcase then with a tommy gun."
Picard got into 4 movies which for better or worse did for the most part continue his ideals with a few hicups such as his quest for vengance against the Borg that was never really talked about in the series or his willingness to stand up against Star Fleet when they want to move another race off a planet. Picard was at his best on the show and ironically so was TNG.
