A Quick Tip by voilodion2012

This site is one of the most informational pages for Japanese cinema on the net. Tons of films are listed in the database, neatly categorized by release date and stuff. It's also clean and nicely laid out with lots of visuals. Other categories like trivia, box office and concept art sections are also great resources and add to the page's appeal.

So why only +2?  Well, it's a fansite...and thus subject to many of the same unintentional biases fan communities are known for.  "Godzilla" and Kurosawa films rule the day here, and the all more obscure or culturally relevant stuff get little than quick mentions or are just ignored.  For example, fantasy films like PRINCESS FROM THE MOON, TEITO MONOGATARI, and THE THREE TREASURES were notable hits in their homeland.  However it would be difficult to infer that from this site as the only attention they receive here is either negative or nonexistent.

I know...it's an English language site run by English speaking enthusiasts. So inevitably the only films they're going to be highlighting are films that are most popular in the West. Unfortunately I think that kind of violates the purpose of the site since I expect a lot of people would come to this site to learn more about the obscure stuff.  You can find reviews about Kurosawa movies anywhere on the web. Likewise you can also find trivia about Godzilla movies in a lot of places too.  I think a site like this should stand out by focusing more on introducing English speakers to films that they would normally overlook rather than just regurgitating what's already popular.

But I do have hope for it. I have interacted with the staff on several occasions and they are really nice, open minded people who are clearly eager to expand the site's potential. It's just a matter of time and resources. Maybe with a little more input from Japanese film fans, a little more development and research, and this project will finally be able to realize its true potential as a truly awesome and definitive internet resource.

well said. Me, I actually just seek out Asian film websites and for info I seek them out in such sites such as Koreanfilm.org or yesasia.com.
