What to watch? Ask jinni and use the power of the Movie Genome!

Many of us have found new music on www.pandora.com based on pandora's "Music Genome" that analyzes different artists and songs and matches them with songs and artists that you have rated well while listening to the online radio. Jinni works in much the same way. In fact, they have what they call a "Movie Genome"

Once you get registered to jinni you can jump right in and start with their "Taste Type" ratings. Here is where you start interacting with the 'genome'. They have created various types of movies and separated them into categories. In each category is a selection of movies, you then rate those movies on a scale from "Awful" to "Must See". For movies that you haven't yet seen you can choose "Likely to see" or "Not for me" or skip that title entirely.

When you're done with the guided "Taste Types" you can go in and rate as many movies as you can think of. As you might imagine, the more you rate, the better the movie recommendations.

When you have supplied sufficient data, the fun begins. You can type what you're looking for in the search box. For example, I typed "smart and funny action film with a twist". Based on what I typed and what I had previously rated, it came up with 6 recommendations:

Midnight Run
Rock and Rolla
Die Hard 3
Die Hard 2
The Big Easy
Devil's Advocate

I have no idea why Die Hard isn't on the list and I'm not sure that Devil's Advocate would be called and Action Film, but jinni is still in beta.

If you have no idea what you type have no fear, you can do "squeeze" out a selection. On the left side of the screen are different criteria that you can check off. This will narrow a search that returned a lot of recommendations and it can also serve as the search. This "squeeze" method gave me good results.

A cool feature allows you to connect your jinni account with your Netflix account. More features are on the way. In fact, they have a "Community" tab that is currently inactive.

Right now you can search for Film, TV, Online Movies and Short Films. It's kind of fun to pick out some online short films and get right to seeing stuff that you might never have known about.

We have choices for movie recommendations friends, reviews, trailers, etc. If you like film and want to add another way of finding stuff you'll probably like, give jinni.com a look.

OMG...they don't have a negative infinity and I'm way anti...LOL Man, I still can't get over him having a kid with Rachel- had you heard that? And no, hon...you don't have to call me that on here if you don't want to!

This sounds really promising and it will be interesting to see how it evolves. I must say that I loved Midnight Run and strongly disliked Die Hard 3, although I see that "smart and funny action film with a twist" is not too specific and as you rate more I am sure that the recommendations would get more personally relevant. I think this type of offering is an example of where the internet is going and similar to whats going on at Lunch. There is so much out there that people need a way to find what is relevant and interesting to them. Great Review.

Thanks for the really thorough and insightful overview of Jinni. To clarify, you can search on Jinni without supplying any info about yourself, but you do have to rate a minimum number of titles to get recommendations. (We plan to add personalized search features in future, which will involve user input.) In terms of the search results, Die Hard doesn't appear because it lacks significant plot twists. But you're right to note that Devil's Advocate is a mistake; we're working on ironing out this kind of thing in our beta phase, and to that end we always appreciate feedback! - Phoebe
