I first stumbled across lastfm.com in college, while searching the internet for one of my favorite bands. Although I had never heard of the site, I was instantly hooked. While searching for a band called Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers, I was suddenly exposed to an array of "similar artists", who have come to be some of my favorites today. For example, after searching for the Sixers, lastfm.com confidently recommended Pat McGee Band, Michael Tolcher & Ari Hest, lesser known, yet exceptionally talented musicians, who I otherwise may have never come across. (As a more recognizable example, typing Britney Spears will lead you to Lady GaGa & the Pussycat Dolls.)
The content on the site has come a long way since then and now offers a comprehensive library of artists and their music…complete with bios, photos, videos and my favorite part, the similar artist search.
Here's how it works! After creating a profile, lastfm.com gives me the ability to access musicians, network with other users, jam out to music stations customized to my tastes and even introduces me to other members with similar musical interests. It gives me the ability to tag songs as I see fit, as well as search for music through these tags. The radio portion of the site (similar to Pandora.com) lets you create a station based on a favorite artist and then adds similar artists to the station that they presume you would enjoy. The other option on the radio allows you to create a station by genre tags, typing "rock" for instance, will create your radio station complete with U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones & more.
Although I haven't been exposed to every single aspect of the site, what I have used, I've loved. Being big on live music shows, it's consistently been a great outlet for finding undiscovered talents, listening to their music, and catching them when they tour in the area… all while still be loyal to my favorites, of course.
If you haven't tried it out, then what are you waiting for?! Whether you're into hardcore rock, punk or acoustic, the site is full of musical genius advice for us music lovers, and the best part is…it's all for free!

Last.fm is a UK based social networking and internet radio site founded in 2002, with over 30 million active users. Last.fm gives users the opportunity to create custom profiles and build radio stations based on their musical interests. Using music software called "Audioscrobbler," last.fm builds a profile of each users interests by recording songs they listen to. From there, the site is able to recommend new artists to users as well as create a list of musical neighbors with similar tastes. The site is a great platform for listening to and discovering new music of all genres.
