When Roblar Winery first appeared off Highway 154 in Santa Ynez, I thought it seemed out of place. I was so used to frequenting small, boutique, family-run wineries that I was thrown off to see such a big building for a winery I'd never heard of. It wasn't like it grew to be big; it seemed to just arrive with a big splash.
The Good
It's beautiful. Spacious inside. It has a lovely patio for a leisurely afternoon. The service is generally cordial. You can order sandwiches. These are all good things. It offers a vibe you don't find in every other tasting room. It can accommodate large groups.
The Bad
It just seemed less genuine than so many of the Valley's other wineries. I felt like someone took the blueprint for a winery from Napa and plopped it down in the middle of the Valley, betting that the passing traffic along 154 would be drawn into its gaping entrance.
But I'm still somewhat undecided.
The Interesting
I'm really intrigued by one of the winery's extracurricular activities. Roblar Winery runs a cooking school. It has a huge commercial kitchen and a dining room. Has anyone tried one of the classes?
They also have a private lounge upstairs for wine club members.
