Great Photo Printer - HUGE Ink Hog

  • Oct 7, 2009
I bought this printer because it was only $100. How could you go wrong getting a photo printer at that price? Until... you quickly run out of ink and realize that it costs a fortune to replace cartridges.

Before I go into the ink, I have to say that the photo quality is great. I use HP photo paper and I love how the colors are so bright and the images are so crisp.

I really like that I can print 4x6 borderless prints on 4x6 paper. It can also print up to 8x10.

This printer has 5 ink cartridges: cyan, magenta, yellow, black, and photo black. If you are in printing or design, you may know that all full color printed pieces are made up of the first four colors. The addition of photo black gives a rich, deep black and creates better contrast. The combination of these inks makes for a great print.

However, the ink disappears from the cartridges very quickly and at about $15 a cartridge (times 5 cartridges...) You can buy XL cartridges at a higher price that last quite a bit longer and you can buy combo packs at a slight discount.

This printer has the ability to print on (printable) CD's and has a dedicated slot for insertion of the blank CD.

The bottom line is that this gives me the ability to print at random and very quickly. I took it to a tea party I held for my daughter. I took photos of all the girls in their party dresses (and white gloves) and while they were decorating picture frames, I printed out the pictures and they left the party with a great memento. I did not need to bring a computer since this printer has card slots built in. There is also a little touch screen display that walks you through color correction, cropping, etc. if you want that control at the printer and not the computer.

HP has great software tools and a low toner reminder system. There are two trays, a 4x6 single print tray and an 8.5 x 11 tray. I'm pretty sure it costs more to print from this printer than to take your images to other stores.

I really like this printer but it is a convenience product, not a money saver.
