A Deeply Philosophical Music

True story. And I promise that it will eventually connect to my review of Kenji Kawai... My dating skills have always left plenty to be desired. Mostly because I volunteer the wrong information too early in the dating cycle. For instance, I find cyborgs to be cool. Especially female cyborgs. Not something to volunteer on the first date. Or, at least, … more

Unintelligent Design: Monkeys as the Makers of Man

"Do I really come from Monkeys" That's what my seven year old nephew asked me during a trip to the zoo. As you might imagine, we were observing the monkeys when the question came from his young mind and mouth. I didn't answer right away. I looked at the monkeys. They didn't bother to look back. They were preoccupied with something else – … more

Release the Kraken

I have a movie going enjoyment-barometer that I call the Wow-O-Meter that I would like to tell you about. Don't worry, I'm not going to try and sell it to you because doggonit I can't seem to get it into a bottle. Anyway, my Wow-O-Meter works like this. I buy my ticket, which as we all know is expensive. I look for a seat that is as far away … more

I WANT MY HEART BACK!!!

Many viewers will call the plot of Repo Men just plain silly and many critics already have. Indeed the idea of a corporation reclaiming life-saving organ transplants from its constituencies who cannot keep up with the payments sounds more like a fun plot than one to be taken seriously. But the reality is that there is more science than fiction in this … more

So I CREATED an Axe Murderer

Embryo may have unintentionally landed in the science-fiction genre. Or perhaps it was going for a less fantastical angle, choosing instead to be tempered in its speculations about where medical technology was heading back in 1976. The movie even begins with something of a disclaimer by a medical doctor who was the technical consultant for the movie, … more

Putting the First Man in Space – as Told From Some Other Distant Planet.

I've noticed that on amazon it is my animé and comic-book based film reviews that are the least well received by voters. That comes as no surprise, animé and comics are sacred cows that must remained untouched by unclean and unconfirmed hands. People take that stuff pretty seriously, and I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't among them. … more

Just Couldn't Stop Laughing at this Stop-Motion Gem.

It's always a good sign when you're an adult in a movie marketed for kids and you find yourself laughing louder than the restless children in the audience. Albeit, it's a tad embarrassing too, but a good sign for the movie none the less. It's that funny. It might even be more embarrassing to admit that I don't think I ever read the book in my youth. … more

One line saved this movie from being a complete bore for me: Dennis Quaid: "Besides, I don't even believe in God." Archangel Micahel: "That's fine. He doesn't believe in you either." Aside from being just a great one-two punch back at modern society's pubescent protests against God, that line pretty much sums up the whole point … more

Kicking Butt After the Age of 50

A quick visit to Wikipedia and I discover that Mr. Gary Oldman is starting to live up to his namesake. No offense, of course, to those over the nice round age of 50. In fact, take it as a compliment. It means that at the age of 51 you can still intimidate the heck out of us younger-folk. That is, if you are anything like Gary Oldman. Even past his … more

Ghost in the Shell 2.0 - Remastered and Reviewed.

Fans of Ghost in the Shell are, most likely, well aware of the re-mastered re-issue of this anime classic by director Mamoru Oshii. For those who need a little catching up, just know that Ghost in the Shell was a breakthrough animation released in 1996 and has since been hallmarked of the genre. It was the inspiration behind The Matrix, with several … more

LOL! I never noticed that your profile was a dual-color, high-contrast silhouette of someone snorting coke. How'd you get away with that?! =D

Doh! Don't say that so loud! LOL. Nah, actually it's lines of *code*... not coke. Hard to tell with the teensy icon. But on the website at the footer it's easier to recognize.

Just one more question, hehe... is your first name Michael or Jeffrey? ;-) It could be, but thought I'll ask anyway!

Oooooh....how I wish my first name were Michael. Then I'd definitely be driving that Lexus.
On September 13, 2009
I'm convinced you'll be driving one but not being driven in one though ;-) Well, wish you luck, may be you'll get it this Christmas!
On September 13, 2009
Is this your official psychic prediction, or just a friendly hope for the best? Who knows, if the book I'm writing does well, maybe I'll have that Lexus after all.
On September 13, 2009
Ask and you shall be given. Have faith, my friend! From what I can see, you will get that Lexus! I've great feel :-)

It's actually a graphic novel. The title is CLONE. I wrote the story and my buddy is doing the illustrations. Here is my synopsis (in progress). Writing a brief for a 300 page book is daunting: CLONE Summary "There slumbers a song in all things Dreaming on and on…" As British philosopher AJ Ayer compared the search for "self" to Chinese boxes, with each box opened we dive deeper into the human body until finally reaching the elusive condition of the human being and the enigma of being human. In the year 2000 when the genome was sequenced, science unlocked the box of the human body. In the year 2062, the box has been opened. It is a time when humanity will be confronted by its own scientific ambivalence towards life. Either by accident or fate, cognitive psychologist Allan Shapiro stumbles upon an inimitable young boy with disabilities. This boy retains only semantic short-term memory. He doesn't remember names, except his own. He calls himself "TJ2." TJ is a clone, but a clone of whom? When the public learns of TJ's existence it sparks a rude awakening to the impotence of government legislation against impatient and emerging technology. A story about the anxiety and angst of the future, CLONE observes how a single boy can shift the self-schemata of society. This is the tale of those who dare to delve, prying at the last box – the box of the human being – and the unforeseen outcomes that consume them.

Cool! You're on the same wavelength as Steven Spielberg's A.I. Did you watch the movie Artificial Intelligence? I love it and this synopsis you just wrote reminds me of that! May be it's a case of pandora box! I'm currently very much interested in nano technology. Wondering what that'd do to our lifestyle in the coming decade!
On September 13, 2009
Incidentally, the new species of architecture as explained on this video talks about integrating nano tech into architecture.
On September 13, 2009
Yeah, I saw it at the theaters, but haven't seen it in quite awhile. I've been wondering about the nano-technological future and where things are going with this tinkering with the human genome. It's difficult to know how to feel about all this stuff. I go back and forth. Kind of interesting that you mentioned A.I. the logo for CLONE was compared to A.I. by a friend of mine. Maybe Spielberg will pick up the story and make it into a movie. Then I'll have two Lexus'! Maybe even three! Heh, heh...
On September 13, 2009
Well, if you do get 3, I won't mind having ours replaced by a new model Do have one send to Toronto! :-) Deal? IF you get 3 this christmas, that is!
On September 13, 2009
It's a deal! ;-)

I'm curious... is Jordan a first name, last name or simply name of the country I visited this January? Interesting profile pix you've here. I took a peep at the website. Cool!!!

I have effectively turned green with envy...in fact, only a few shades away from the green on the lunch website :-) That's awesome that you get around like that. I am still getting over my fear of being in the air. I've asked my genes to give me wings but either they won't do it or they're taking their sweet time in granting my request.
On September 13, 2009
I guess driving across America in a new Lexus would be just as cool! ;-) I live to fly and if I've had my way, I'd have learned how to fly a jet! Still hoping to one day, either over Alaska or the Grand Canyon :-) Keeping my fingers crossed too! Well, I did get to Antarctica, which was more or less a dream I never actually dreamed about. So, what can I say? :-)

saw that you're a fan of Oshii. I randomly picked up Avalon ages ago and was impressed but didn't quite understand how it was a live action English language film that seemed like be edited like anime. And the actors were Polish. Do you know the backstory behind this? So curious. Thanks!
On August 24, 2009

Not really. I do know that Oshii has a strong affinity for Poland and Eastern European settings. His last animation, The Sky Crawlers, uses Polish architecture and apparently Oshii and his staff traveled there to do their location scouting. A very good friend of mine is from Poland and she immediately recognized the setting -- even as an animation. In fact, she knew that the location was Warsaw. Apparently, the leading actress in Avalon is a very famous actress in Poland. As far as the live-action...I did read once that Oshii said he likes to jump around between live-action and anime but that his heart is with anime. That *might* explain why Avalon feels like anime in flesh. But that's just my speculation. Hope my answer helps a little. Are you a big fan of Oshii too?
