Foursquare is not the first geolocating app to surface, but it seems to have gotten more of a foothold than some of the others. I had another called Loopt on my iPhone for a bit, but it's just no fun when it's just two of you pinging each other back and forth. Somehow Foursquare's points for checking in, badges of honor and made-up Mayor status has helped make this app stick. Love the idea of a large social game via mobile, love that's it a way to let you know where your friends are. Love that you can compete with friends to show off how often you go out to cool places and what a scenester you are! But I don't like that many places (at least the ones I frequent) haven't been added to their database of establishments.
