When sharing can get out of hand!

Is there anyone who is still not on Facebook by now? Yes! Many of my personal friends. Having said that, they are possibly the minority rather than the majority in the world now.

So, I'll keep this short and simple. My take on Facebook.
I had an account on it for many years but I hardly logged in. The main reason being I don't really know a great many who are on it and I was residing in China for the last 4 years, I was logged out of it. It's banned!

Now that we got over that, let's talk about Facebook, from my perspective:
  1. More than 1.3 billions Chinese are technically not on it,  unless one bypass the great firewall.
  2. It's too time-consuming and not much real/decent work can be done when you're on it!
  3. My few friends whom I got to know from VirtualTourist.com are on it, hence, I'm on it just to keep in touch with them :)
  4. 2 great features - sharing of photos and videos (easier than any other sites! I was surprised I could just add Youtube links without having to copy the embed codes!). Not mine though, but I snooped around others' quite a bit, hehe...
  5. It's Facebook, one of the major social media sites. No one can afford not to be on it or at least have a working knowledge of it!

That's it... stay connected but stay out of it when you've got work to do!

When sharing can get out of hands! When sharing can get out of hands! When sharing can get out of hands! When sharing can get out of hands!

Nice take on this. I gave up on Facebook and just open it to see if I might be missing a friend or relative's birthday. Most of the things on there are people's location (I'm freezing on my train to work), some stupid web page I am supposed to like, or some stupid video that somebody saw. Time spent on it is usually "boring."

I use Facebook to keep in touch with friends and we like to comment back and forth, but I use it mainly as a resource tool for my graphic designs on my blog; every post I make on both my blogs are automatically posted on Facebook; this has brought me many new digi-scrappers to the blogs which will prove especially useful when I open my online store in the future. Blog traffic has been great since Facebook, as well as Twitter, not to mention I have been able to be in contact with other designers I may have never known if not for Facebook. As far as playing games and using apps - I block those because I am not into that, although I do send a bear hug to special friends every once in a while LOL - one does need to be careful though and use in moderation and also be responsible and block spam or harmful applications.

Great comment. I disagreed with the reviewer that Facebook is fine but not very workable. I see nothing wrong with the Internet either as long as it remains a free market area. I would still like to see all the porn sites, hate sites and spambots shut down though. :)

Thank you Scotman and I agree with you completely; the porn and racist's sites are something we can definitely do without-it angers me terribly. I opened a FB for my daughter and she chats back and forth with all her friends and her brother and sister, but I keep a VERY close eye for any invitations and apps she may receive so I can block them. I agree with you too that FB is very workable -- we as people who like the Internet just need to be smart about it!! Thank you for your comment!!

China blocks a lot of content so that argument against it is not really valid. China blocks Western films, too.

You list a lot of negatives on this when it actually is a useful tool. As with anything on the internet, use it with moderation. Hard for me to tell if you're for it or against it. Three stars is a positive rating.  Those were cute cartoons, but I am puzzled why Obama.  A politician would have to be pretty dumb not to have an internet presence.

What gives you the idea that I'm against it? I simply say I wasn't logging in when I was in China. It's a hassle which I didn't bother to find a way to go around it. As it is, not many people I know or want to keep in touch with are on it.

A tool is only useful as the users make them to be. I'm not for it or against it until I have more useful need of it. For now, it's not proving too useful for me. Those people on Facebook whom I keep in touch with I have other means of keeping in touch with which is more efficient for me. Those I hope to find, well, unfortunately, I haven't found any of them :(

I do like many social media tools and I give them a try regardless. Unless they are a hassle to use, I normally don't give a bad rating. I've had great experiences from these tools so I'm more willing to give it a try for an extended period of time. As I said, it's not something I can't go without, for now.

OK, I understand better. I use email much more than Facebook, but I still find it useful, and others find it useful to shoot me a quick message. It has its problems but I know how to avoid spam, etc. I use the "search" feature in Facebook to find others. Sometimes it works.

Whatever may be definitely flawed about facebook, it is a useful tool at times
July 11, 2011
Oh, I agree. A tool is as good as its users make it to be! Considering the many people whose life is changed by it, I'd say it's useful to a lot of folks! :)

July 11, 2011
yeah, I can't really get into it. But I do like that I've met some new folks and reconnected with some of my friends. I've blocked three folks so far. Two old grilfriends and one stalker. :(

Stalker? Ha, I'm getting an entire new vocab where Facebook is concerned!

When I first created my Facebook profile, I did so in order to communicate with a few people who I met on the old (and seemingly ancient) Yahoo 360 social network. I had become quite good virtual friends with them and didn't want to lose touch with them whenever 360 shut down.    I believed that those few select people (six friends total), would be my entire world on Facebook. Soon enough, however, I started getting friend requests from people I hadn't seen since high school …

I know a bubble when I see one!
This review is about Facebook as a stock rather than a social media site. It's about business!      Facebook had its IPO listed on Nasdaq last friday (May 18) making Mark Zuckerberg a $20 billion man! He rang in the bell for Nasdaq opening & his own wedding the next day (May 19). That makes Mark Zuckerberg not just the richest 28 year old on the planet but also the luckiest guy in the world!!!            So much about Mark Zuckerberg. …

Global phenomenon? Yes. A scourge of every day life? Absolutely. Here's why you should follow my example and pull the plug on Zuckerberg's narcissistic ego-porn site.      So today I took the leap and unfriended myself from Facebook, which is ironic considering that I spend a major part of my time helping clients buy social media advertising - it's like being the drug dealer who won't touch the stuff. And it does strangely feel like I've disconnected …

Social Networking has, for the most part, become a part of our everyday lives.  It's still in its infancy, though.  For most of us sites like Friendster and Myspace got us started in Social Networking, while other sites such as Amazon have adapted to becomeing more social networking like in a time that it's a big thing.  Yet when it comes to social networking no website stands out more than Facebook.  This is for several reasons.  Facebook has become a social networking …

I realized very shortly after setting up my facebook account that I’d gotten myself into deep trouble. It was September, a little over a year ago. I found my thoughts racing, and usually heading straight back to my friend list. I obsessed over my profile even when I was doing other things; I remember going running by the lake and wondering almost the whole while which Elliott Smith quote defined me as a person. I learned to love chatting with three people at a time—when I’d see …

Ouch!!! 40% LOSS for investors in its first 10 days of trading on the NASDAQ! More if you bought at the height of around $45 on its listing day!!!      I wrote a review of it (I know a bubble when I see one!) on the weekend after its listing looking for a price range of $25-28! It recorded a low of $26.83 yesterday (May 31) before a technical rebound at the close!       So, what's next?!

It began trading on Nasdaq around $43 last friday. Today, in just a market day, over the weekend after Mark's wedding, it's trading at around $33!!! Lucky Mark who sold it at $38 with the help of Morgan Stanley! Not so lucky for the investors (retail or institutional) even if they are buying for the long term!!! They could have gotten it for $33 today or even less later!      PE of over 100?! Forget it!!! Are you sure you're that good a friend with Mark? ;-)   …

I'm on Facebook and I hate myself for it. The only reason I joined was because invitations from friends to events kept flying over my head, and when they asked where I was, they would always tell me it was on Facebook. Herein is the big problem I have with the site: People consider it all they need. Basic human decency and intimate, detailed conversation is being eschewed. But on the upside, I've made very useful connections with online friends and it allows me to keep up with the goings-on in Chicago, …

I don't know why but I just can't muster any interest in Facebook. Spend the overwhelming majority of my online time here on Lunch. Find it much more scintillating.
Quick Tip by . December 17, 2010
Originally, I signed up for Facebook because I had heard it was a good way to keep in touch with friends I knew from school back when. In that regard, the site was a bit of a letdown, but I currently like it more than when I initially joined. While the site has become more commercial and there's been some controversy about the new privacy policy, I think that the site has opened up and allows for more creativity with their new applications.
