This book was is very important in today's society. I'm sure that Orwell could see what was happening in the world, and we're getting closer and closer to where he saw us. This is a book that I would, and have, recommend to anyone. I have gone through at least a dozen copies of this that I just gave to people to read and told them to pass it on. This is a very well written book, with a bit of a love story to hang onto readers, but I thought the most important storyline is that between Winston and the government. George Orwell has written some fantastic books that everyone should read, and if there were some books that should be required reading for high school, at least one of his should appear somewhere. Excellent work that can be enjoyed by anyone, and very much should be.

This negative utopia called "1984" was written in 1948. The author, George Orwell, (whose real names were Eric Arthur Blair) was already dying of tuberculosis (in his native England) when it was completed. The book used metaphors to convey the author's perception of the Soviet Union. It has all the essences of a future read: at least in that 1948 when it was first published. This was a well written book and one that receives not even a modicum of the attention it deserves. 1984 is one of those eponymous books that is probably known more for its setting than the actual story. It's the originator of the 'Big Brother' that we have all become familiar with. It's now used to refer to overbearing government schemes which shows just how pervasive this book is in modern society.
