"The Giver" is one of my all time favorite books. I am not an avid reader. I have never been one, but when I first was required to read this book in the sixth grade, I have loved it ever since. In fact, when I was in 6th grade, I would get into trouble because I kept reading ahead.
I couldn't help it, it is a wonderful thought provoking, and quick page turning book! I found myself identifying with Jonas, feeling as though I have a huge calling but not knowing where or how that calling will come to be. Jonas travels through some difficult ethical questions, finding more questions when he recieves his apprentenship with the Giver. Ironically, this is the most knowlegable position in the community, the very reason it poses so many questions for Jonas.
This book has been taught to children of many ages, and it also found itself on the banned book list, but I find it to be one of the best reads of my life. I continue to read it 10 years after my first page turn, and still find myself turning the pages again and again.
