Dear Vodka: Your days are numbered. It's been a good run. Now make room for rum, whiskey, bourbon, and rye. A.J. Rathbun's got your number. --The Boston Chapter of Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails (LUPEC Boston) In … see full wiki
This is a cool and classy book full of recipes for mixed drinks using the “Dark Spirits” of whisky, scotch, bourbon, and rye. I am a fan of the dark spirits so this book is a great addition for when I want to have a party with a drink theme.
The recipes are easy to follow and run the gamut from well known drinks like Whiskey Sour and Mike Collins to ones I’ve never hard of like Enchanted Field and Power to the People.
The illustrations in the book are great, until you realize that there is no way your drinks are going to come out looking that cool.
Make sure to read the first chapter: “How to Unleash the Dark Spirits.” There is a lot of important information here that will make the recipes more understandable.
There are also some great one page side notes sprinkled throughout the book that are good to read as well.
The only downside of the book is the organization. To me it’s a little chaotic. I used little Avery note tabs to mark the pages I wanted to reference.
Also, sometimes I have no clue what an ingredient even is, much less where to find it, for some of the drinks. I just have to scratch my head and move on.
Despite my minor quibbles, this is a great tool to have if you like mixed drinks.
