The Zombie

  • The zombie is a tiki drink whose main feature is a large quantity of rum with the alcoholic bite is disguised or smoothed out by the presence of a variety of fruit juice.  The zombie typically has the alcoholic punch of three generous cocktails.  Don the Beachcomber is credited with the origin of the zombie.

Here is my basic Zombie Recipe (with three types of rum)

1 1/2 oz Light rum
1 1/2 oz Dark Rum
1/2 oz Apricot Brandy
1 oz Pineapple Juice
1 oz Orange Juice
1 oz Lime Juice
1 tsp Simple Syrup (Dissolve a sugar cube in 1 Tsp hot water then let it cool)
5 Large Ice Cubes
1 oz Over proof rum

Shake the first seven ingredients with the ice cubes in a cocktail shaker
Pour into a tall glass with the ice.
Float the last ounce of overproof rum on top.

This is a dangerous Bar Drink meant only when you have a designated driver who can get you home.  I find sipping a Zombie is most enjoyable in the evening when I have nowhere to go and want to just idle the time away.
