Costco..... The great American Negociant

This review in response to JR's review "Great Opportunity to Try Something New".

Essentially Costco has put an American twist on the tried and true negociants in Burgundy. What Jadot, Louis Latour and Joseph Drouhin have perfected in Burgundy, Costco in doing here. In the Burgundian model the negociants will not only buy bulk wine form other suppliers but also grapes and make and blend the wine themselves. Make no mistake, Costco is not making this wine (there is a Kirkland Winery just outside of Napa.... but there is no connection) but they are doing a great job of contracting with some of the best winemakers in different areas to custom bottle some fantastic wines and as JR mentioned, at a great price. The wine buyers at Costco are what makes these projects work, they taste through different lots of bulk wine for a specific style they are looking for and put a great product in the bottle and stand behind the Kirkland reputation.

Personally, I enjoy the stories I can tell about the bottle of wine on my table as much as the juice in the glass. Wine is the most interesting adult beverage because it is "vintage dated" and represents the grapes, weather, people and hard work that happened during that year and will be different from year to year as these variables change. No other beverage can make this claim and that is what fascinates me about wine. If you fall in love with a bottle of Kirkland Wine you had better race back  to Costco and buy the whole case because the next bottle you buy could be from a completely different vineyard and probably even a different winemaker.  My favorite occasions to pop the cork on a Kirkland wine is when I am home alone or if my dinner guest get more than 4 or 5 bottles into my cellar.

"or if my dinner guest get more than 4 or 5 bottles into my cellar" -- hahaha :)

Interesting that you point out that Costco is not actually making this wine.  I never thought about it, but that totally makes sense.  I take it that the process is akin to how store brands make products like soda for instance.  That they don't own their own factory or the machines, but rather contract a big soda plant and hire their own people to do it.  Well, Costco seems to be doing a pretty good job at it!  Thanks for sharing, Shayne! :)

Costco's private label wines are great for a number of reasons, but in my opinion it allows you to experiment and try something new with the comfort and security of knowing you have the Kirkland brand behind it.      The Kirkland Brand:  As someone who shops a lot at Costco, I've come to trust the Kirkland Brand.  Now this isn't like most private label brands that you'll find at other stores.  Typically private labels compete on price and therefore are on the low …

Kirkland Wine by Costco - a great way to drink your way around the world
Like most Kirkland (Costco) products, their wines are high quaity at a very reasonable price. I haven't been disappointed with any Kirkland wine I've tried. They seem to be continually trying to find new, good grapes and wine, which resuls in an ever-changing lineup of wines from around the world.  Here's an exmaple of some of the Costco wines I"ve sampled (and enjoyed) over the past few years:      a great Pinot from Central Otago, New Zealand that I loved (I'm a …
