The Changing face of the Enterprise

The Enterprise NX-01 was Earths first Warp Five Starship. It was launched in 2151 under the Command of Jonathan Archer. Over the course of this ships service made first contact with numerous species including the Orion, Andorians, and Axanar. By its Third year, it was investigating an attack on earth by a mysterious race called the Xindi, eventually participating in the battle that saved earth from destruction. (Its not known if the Enterprise took part in the Earth Romulan War) By the end of its life in addition to its mission of exploration the Enterprise also took on a more diplomatic role; Transporting Delegates to Earth for the signing of the Federation Charter. As it Stands now the NX-01 is in a Starfleet museum on Pluto.

Of all the Enterprises on this List; this one is the most famous and well known. The Constitution-Class USS Enterprise was under the command of Two other Captains before Kirk. Its when he took command for his Five Year Mission that the Enterprise shot into fame. The Enterprise Defended earth from numerous enemies, Klingons, Romulans, V'ger, The Fesarius of the First Federation, Even the Doomsday Machine responsible for destroying the USS Constellation.

The Enterprise wasn't just a warship, it was the flagship of the Federation and like its counterpart 100 years before (TheNX-01) it was also a vessel of exploration. Over the years of its service it made first contact with numerous species. Unlike the NX-01 the Enterprise met its demise in an unceremonious fashion.
 
Instead of peacefully being put into mothballs and decommissioned, The Enterprise was self destructed by Kirk to destroy a Klingon Bird of Prey and a boarding Party on board this ship. To make matters worst, the secondary hull was pulled into the genesis planets orbit and burned up in the atmosphere.

The Third overall Starship Enterprise and Second commissioned by Starfleet. The Enterprise-A is a refit Constitution Class Starship.
After the Destruction of the original USS Enterprise, the Enterprise-A was put into service in 2286. During its shakedown it was called to investigate a kidnapping on Nimbus 3, where it was then taken over by Sybok. The ship was eventually recovered. In 2293 the Enterprise served as an escort to Kronos 1 the Klingon Ambassadors flag ship, there is was drawn into a conspiracy to derail the Khitomer Accords. After a tense fight with The Cloaked bird of prey, the Enterprise is contacted by Starfleet to be decommissioned.  The Enterprise-As last voyage was in 2293.

The Forth Starship the bear the name Enterprise. The Enterprise-B was an Excelsior-Class Refit. It was launched in the same year the Enterprise-A was decommissioned. During the ships maiden Voyage (a quick run around the block, according to Captain Harriman) It's received a distress signal by two ships trapped in an energy ribbon called the Nexus. Because the ship launched without all its equipment (No Torpedos, No Tractor beam) it became trapped in the Nexus too when it moved to Transporter range to assist the two ships.
 
To free the ship James T Kirk went down to deflector control to initiate a Resonance Burst. As the ship began to get free, it is hit with a discharge from the Nexus that causes extensive damage to the engineering areas. Kirk is believed to have died from the accident and the Enterprise-Bs first mission became notorious for this.

This ship was introduced in Star Trek the Next Generation. Although it only appeared once in all of Star Trek, its role was very important. In 2344 the Enterprise-C received a distress call from a Klingon outpost; this outpost was being attacked by four Romulan Warbirds. Instead of leaving the Klingons there to their fate the Captain decided to render assistance. Not much is known about the battle, only that the Enterprise-C fought valiantly and was destroyed. But it was enough to impress the Klingons reinforcing the peace between the two powers.

Twenty years after the destruction of the Enterprise-C, a new Enterprise was commissioned. The Enterprise-D; the Enterprise-D was a Galaxy-Class Starship. Commanded by Jean Luc Picard and Flagship of the federation, being assigned to this ship was considered very prestigious.
 
Being the flagship the Enterprise made first contact with Dozens of new species and countless times defended the federation and Earth from numerous threats. The Enterprise-Ds last mission was in 2371 when while trying to stop Dr Soren from destroying the Veridianstar, was attacked by a Klingon Bird of Prey. The Bird of Prey commanded by the Duras Sisters got a hold of the Enterprises shield frequencies and was able to fire through its shields. Although the Enterprise came out victorious after the battle; the damage was enough to cause a Warp core breach that destroyed the Stardrive section and sent the Saucer section crashing into Veridian III.

Commissioned a year after the destruction of the Enterprise-D, the Enterprise-E was the newest Federation Flag Ship. As stated by Geordie La Forge (at the time) the Sovereign-Class was the most advanced ship in the fleet. When launched the ship spent one year on its shakedown.
Not one to stay out of trouble long, it soon found itself (like its predecessors) defending the Federation from its enemies. Soon after it Shakedown the Enterprise-E went back in time to stop the Borg from stopping Earth First Contact with the Vulcans. Two years Later the Enterprise and her crew were instrumental in stopping a forcible Federation of the Ba'ku from their planet. In 2379 the Enterprise was invited to Romulus for peace negotiations. Unfortunately this was a ruse constructed my Shinzon to get Captain Picard so that he could perform a full transfusion, and to wage war against the Federation using his new weapon, The Scimitar.
 
The Current Status of the Enterprise-E is unknown. According to the Star Trek Countdown Comic book (which is not cannon), it is eventually under the command of Data resurrected in the body of B4. The Enterprise did battle with the Narada just before it entered the Black hole that sent it back to 2233.

Almost nothing is known of the Enterprise-J. In all of Star trek it has appeared only once. The Enterprise-J is in service in the 26^th century. Captain Archer visited the ship when Daniels took him forward it time. When it was shown it was actively engaged in a battle with The sphere builders at Procyon V. The Battle of Procyon V was the Federations last offensive against the Sphere builders the final push that drove them back into their realm.
 
Hopefully in the future we can learn a bit more about this ship.
