It was good. It was exciting. I had a great time. Everyone in the theater had a great time. I'd go again. I went again. I'd have fun a second time. I liked it when stuff blew up. Yay, yay, what a great time.
The Star Trek franchise finally gets the shot in the arm it desperately needed, but that's not entirely a good thing. The moralising, intellectualising and stately grandeur that marked out Roddenberry's Trek has gone, replaced by visceral thrills, eye candy and fast editing. The movie entertains and thrills, but it's ultimately hollow - all muscle and no brains. This is Trek for a new generation; retooled and remodeled for teen appeal. It's very telling that they manage to shoehorn in some blatant … more
I am not a hardcore Trekkie. I used to be, back in the day. I've seen every episode of the original series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager and tolerated most every episode of Enterprise before I lost interest. I own a few of the DVDs, including all the good movies, and I do watch them from time-to-time. But I'm not obessed, like I used to be. I no longer own any of the novels, for example, and can't remember the last time I attended a Trek-specific convention. But … more
Growing up watching the first `Star Trek: The Original Series (Remastered) - Three Season Pack' series, I was always transported by the voyages of the USS Enterprise. During the late sixties the show was enticingly different and bound to reach its cult status. It was always a wonderful departure from the endless inane sitcoms and the TV treadmill of rehashed Westerns, variety shows, and other drivel. 'Star Trek' did for TV during the sixties what 'Twilight Zone: The Complete Definitive Collection' … more
My own expectations for this film killed it a bit for me.I did my best not to read the reviews about Star Trek, however as I sat in the theatre nearly everyone around me was saying how good they heard this film was. Everyone was positively excited about this momentous event in filmmaking history. The film was good I thought, not great. The only film of recent memory that has actually lived up to and exceeded its hype in my book was Batman The Dark Knight. That was a great film.. Before that it … more
I was prepared to hate this movie after being bored so many times in the past by previous Star Trek TV series and movies. However, this movie was ah-mazing. The action, story-line and characters kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time with never a dull moment. And I want to reiterate, that this is coming from someone that never appreciated the series before hands, and therefore only Capt. Kirk and Spock held any familiarity with me. I can only assume it would be that … more
In order to get big rewards in life you have to take big risks. If there is one thing that the Star Trek universe hasn't done in 20-25 years its take risks. The franchise has suffered greatly for it, continuing to follow a formulaic approach that has made the franchise stale, predictable, and for quite a while... DEAD. Not sick, not on life support, but D-E-A-D. Those days are over. The 11th feature presentation is quite simply the first GREAT Star … more
Boredom took me to this movie, and I'm all the better for it because I came out of it with an excitement that will motivate my second viewing this Sunday. As a person who has never cared much for the Star Trek series, I must say that what JJ Abrams has pulled off is strong enough to make me want to back peddle and see the movies that came before it. While the directing is stellar, I have to wonder if the lions share of the credit should go to Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orchi … more
Though it has been a stable of our culture for forty years Star Trek has always polarized audiences. Some feel the series is slow and meandering. Some people feel that Star Trek is actually very smart and intelligent, to the point where they claim that people who don't get it simply don't think enough. Both sides have a point. The series has always been both things, yet neither of those things at the same time. It's such a unique creation that it's up to interpretation. Do some bloggers take it … more
If you watch Star Trek: First Contact with the writers commentary on, you'll get to a point towards the end of the movie where the writers admit to Star Trek's waning popularity and say that it needs a jolt. Continutity issues were starting to pile up, the francise was over-exposed and good story ideas were running dry. Not too much later, a new Star Trek trailer for a new movie (one with a big fat budget) was shown and what I saw was baffling. I saw a lot of … more
I thought this movie to be an excellent new breath of fresh air into a franchise that has been hurting since Star Trek IV, The Voyage Home. The characters are full of energy and the use of Back To The Future techniques to alter the past and create a new timeline has left it open for several sequels without impinging on current Star Trek lore. A Romulan ship from the future arrives at the time when James T. Kirk is being born. Immediately they set in motion a new … more
Pros: Stellar special effects; okay plot-line Cons: Some plot holes, of course; not enough character development. The Bottom Line: The movie is a fun, exhilarating, fresh body of entertainment The Star Trek franchise has been alive for over forty-five years and through all of the various incarnations: Star Trek The Next Generation, Star Trek Deep Space Nice, Star Trek Voyager, Star Trek: Enterprise, as well as nine … more
Pros: It's freaking Star Trek! Cons: Not quite as conceptual as the show The Bottom Line: One H and suddenly the whole thing is an H no matter what! How the hell did that happen?! At this point there's probably no way to write about Star Trek without saying this ain't your folks' Star Trek. It's stating the obvious. Besides, the truth of the matter is that it hasn't been your folks' Star Trek since the 1980's, when Star Trek: … more
Pros: Great FX and Story Cons: Some plot holes, and plays loose with Trek History. The Bottom Line: A fantastic new direction for the franchise. With declining attendance at conventions and a dwindling audience for recent films and the last Star Trek series, Enterprise, Paramount was desperate to find a way to breathe new life into their franchise. So they pinned their hopes on director J.J. Abrams. Even with a string of hit … more
