Overly bureaucratic and deskbound, he was at least able to grow a bit bolder after a time-hopping encounter with Kirk.

There is often the debate about "Kirk vs Picard" in who is better or cooler.  For the most part, I never really had an opinion.  Kirk was a soldier and a man of action who wasn't afraid of getting his hands dirty to save lives and Jim did have a way with the ladies.  Picard was far more refined with using violence as a last resort not to mention being a skilled diplomat to talk his way to sensible solutions.  He still made some lady friends from time to time.  …

The diplomatic and Shakespearean learned Picard often saw violence as a last resort and was in charge of the Federation flagship. Awesome.
