I started gold prospecting as a kid in the mountains and streams of Northern California. Back then suction dredging was becoming very popular with the locals among others. My family had been gold prospectors and pocket hunters for several generations in Siskiyou County California. After a couple of years of panning with metal pans I went to the black plastic Keene gold pans. It was easy to see the gold in the black pans and they didn't have to be burned or baked before each use so that make gold panning a lot more convenient. I worked on a big dredge in the Klamath river for one summer and learned the art of panning pretty good. Over the years I have continued to prospect here and there as I spend a good deal of time in the outdoors. I have had many gold pans and I have come to like two over the years; Garrett gold pans and Klondike gold pans. I have several different sizes of these gold pans. I like to use the larger gold pans where I can. This way I can pan more material and get a better idea of what kind of gold is around the patch I am prospecting. The smaller pans are generally used to clean up fine gold with its finer riffles. With the medium gold pans you can do both. The Garrett 10" Back Packer Gold Pan is a medium pan and just right for a back packing trip.

I find these Garrett Gold Pans good for the beginner or the old sour dough miners. If you have a vague idea of how to pan and don't go too fast you'll keep your gold in a Garrett gold pan. The riffle design is superb. Garrett also sells starter kits where you get several pans, a sifter and a few other goodies. If you are a serious gold prospector I highly recommend checking out the Garrett Products. If you are just starting out a better gold pan would be hard to find. I have had some of my pans for years and I have never broke one. They are very sturdy and last for years. Gold prospecting and gold panning takes a bit of practice to learn. I recommend finding a miner / gold prospector who will show you how to pan. Keep in mind they'll never tell you where. If you do bother to ask where the gold is you'll get the old, Well it's right over secret ridge in No Tell creek! There is also lots of clubs out there for the hobby miners as well. A couple I can recall are The Lost Dutchman's Association, The New 49ers and the Gold Prospector. I highly recommend Garrett Gold Pans to any gold prospector.

Whoa, I didn't know people still went gold prospecting anymore! I worked in the jewelry industry for a long time, and I'd love to see where the real source of the goods that I deal with come from someday with your tips. This sounds like the coolest hobby ever and I'd love to hear more about it. Thanks for sharing, Joe! :)

Oh yeah there is a lot of recreational mining in northern California. It's fun and addicting! Thanks for the compliment and I'll be writing lots about gold mining and the gear involved in the future.
