Bar dancers, a slasher and a guilt ridden ex-boxer. Just another night in Fear City.

Some maniac is slashing and maiming bar dancers in New York City. Matt Rossi (Tom Berenger) is a former prize fighter who works as a P.I. and helps out his old manager and buddy Nicky (Jack Scalia) watch out over his bar dancers. Matt was at one time attached to one of them, a strung out dancer named Loretta (Melanie Griffith) who's also happens to be one of the biggest draws amongst the club circuit. She's romantically involved with Leila (Rae Dawn Chong) but still has feelings for Matt. The mysterious killer has shaken the confidence of all the dancers and a police detective (Billy Dee Williams) is putting heat on Matt because the victims are all some how tied to him. When those that are close to Matt begin to fall victim to this homicidal maniac there's only one thing Matt can do. Stalk to streets of Fear City and stop this predator before his kills again.
Abel Ferrara's first mainstream film suffered a great deal during post-production. The movie was severely edited so it can receive an R-rating. A tight thriller that's fueled by a gritty script written by Nicholas St. John and faced paced direction from Abel Ferrara. A weird violent thriller that has one of the best showdowns you'll see outside of a Hong Kong flick. There's plenty of sleaze, blood and T & A for exploitation fans. Ola Ray and Maria Conchita Alonso have small parts as bar dancers. I have to recommend this film for fans of Abel Ferrara, 80's exploitation movie fans and those who like to watch slasher films. David Johansen performs the film's theme song "New York Doll".
