Dawn Davenport (Divine) is a high school aged girl who hangs out with the "out" crowd and really doesn't care about school. All she wants is a pair of cha-cha heels for Christmas. When she doesn't get them as a present she runs away from him and into the arms of a sleazy guy named Earl (also played by Divine). She gets knocked up by him and her life is changed forever. Dawn turns to crime to support herself and the baby and the rest is history. Mink Stole co-stars as Dawn's daughter Taffy, Edith Massey as the mother-in-law along with David Lochary and Mary Vivian Pearce.
Female Trouble marks the last time the Waters' Dreamland crew worked together. This has to be Divine's finest hour in acting, he pulls off the two roles. Waters' subject matter and themes presented in this film still hold true to this day. He balances the humor and gross out set pieces perfectly. They compliment each other instead of overpowering one another. John Waters obsession with serial killers and their ilk is strongly represented here.
