Law & Order is my favorite time waster, my favorite way to spend a Sunday afternoon when I'm sick or just too tired to do anything, my favorite go-to background show while I cruise the Internet....well, you get the picture. There are three Law & Orders- the original with Sam Waterson who has played the DA (now Executive D.A) for 18 seasons, Special Victims Unit (my favorite with Mariska Hargitay, Ice T, and Christopher Meloni) and finally, Criminal Intent.
Criminal Intent follows two detectives played by Vincent D'Onofrio (who I just can't ever get past ever since I saw him in The Cell with Jennifer Lopez, I always just think he's off because of it) and Kathryn Erbe as they explore the more psychological aspect of crime solving. I don't know what it is about these two but, they don't seem to have the same "It" factor as the cast members of the other shows. It comes across often as a little dull to me, like they're trying too hard and it's not as natural as the others. It could just be my bias because I still watch it but, it doesn't suck me in as well as the original Law & Order or SVU.
Jeff Goldblum joins the cast to try to revive it a bit and is his quirky self. Eric Bogosian as Capt. Danny Ross is actually quite impressive. I have the same feelings toward Bogosian that I do with D'Onofrio because I've read most, if not all of his plays before I ever saw him as an actor. Both actors do a commendable job in their respective roles and do add a little something that the show was lacking, I just don't know what.
Overall, Criminal Intent is the one that I keep on in the background when I'm doing stuff on the Internet. Every once in a while it'll pique my interest and then, of course in typical Law & Order fashion, I have to see the end. It won't waste hours of your day, which is actually a good thing every once in a while.
