Sweetly Obnoxious

I see both side of the Rachael Ray debate: 1) That her homespun, colloquial-esque (no one really says "E.V.O.O.", do they?) manner of expression is warm and approachable; and 2) that her deliberately unpretentious approach is way too rough and obnoxious. Furthermore, I think both are actually compatible in the way that you appreciate a backwoods grandmother or aunt who comes from a different time and place, talks too loud, smokes too much, aggravates in large doses--but is masterful in the kitchen. I see Rachael Ray as a character, but one that is really close to home.

I first saw Rachael Ray on the cover of her magazine, long before I ever saw her on TV or heard her voice. Suffice it to say she looks a lot sweeter on the cover of a glossy magazine. I think the gruff delivery is a little striking to anyone who comes across her on television, but I found it particularly strange after getting a far different idea about her from just seeing a digitally-doctored image. Fortunately, I love the character noted above, and she reminds me of more than a couple family members who I'm glad I've never seen more than a handful of times per year. The only real problem for me with the character is that Rachael Ray is too young to fit it perfectly. But give her a few more years and allow her to get just a little more rough around the edges, and I think she'll be an even more brilliantly polarizing personality.

i've warmed up to ray-ray in recent years, mainly because i think her sweet-but-obnoxious personality is markedly different from her real personality, and that she actually might be, more, well...normal than we think. her voice could still wake me from a sound sleep, though!

I don't even think for me it's her personality perse, just the actual sound of her voice. I just don't like the way it sounds.

i never thought about embracing her gruff, obnoxious personality, and perhaps waiting till she gets a little rougher like a grandma from a backwards town, but thanks for convincing me for thinking about her in a new light. yup, I normally cannot stand the sight of her.

I like the woman. She's personable and can create good recipes without using ingredients that cost an arm and a leg.

Her cooking is all about gimmicks. She's the latest version of processed food for America.

I don't hate her, but that squaky voice of hers puts me off my dinner. Something a chef SHOULDN'T do.

People spell my name wrong because of this woman's name being plastered all over everything in your grocery store

Here's the thing about Rachel Ray, she's an amazing recipe writer. For someone who writes so fast, her recipes are original and almost always work.

Rachel Ray is the poster child for what The Food Network shouldn't be. Along with that semi-home made chick and Paula Dean they all bastardize the art of cooking with their stupid catch-phrases and recipes that are chock full of canned, boxed and mostly pre-prepared ingredients.

Her recipes are so much fun! You don't have to write them down, just print them from the web.

She's a little weird, a little out there, but she's all in all an enjoyable personality with some really great ideas.
