A bit of a puzzle

  • May 13, 2012

(special thanks to Big Finish for sending me a review copy!)

A cell. Four walls, one door. Jamie McCrimmon can escape, but it means unravelling a puzzle of extraordinary complexity.

And there are more than just two players in this game. The Doctor is there. So is his opponent Si

As a hero turns killer, and a rebellion becomes anarchy, the lines between good and evil are blurred. And so does the distinction between cause and effect…

Starring: Frazer Hines (Jamie McCrimmon), Dominic Mafham (Moran)

This was such an odd story.

First off, it takes place in multiple time streams. That’s something that’s very hard to do in fiction, especially when those time streams appear in a non-linear fashion. Thankfully Big Finish is up to the task of making sense of such things, as they should be when writing Doctor Who stories.

Second, it ended abruptly. I mean very abruptly. So much so that at first I wondered if I might have skipped a file, but no. It just ended in an odd, inconclusive sort of place. It could be set up for a continuation of the story, which wouldn’t surprise me, as Big Finish has done such things before.

But the oddness aside, this was also a very good story, and one where the Companion Chronicles format really works well. Hines continues to prove that he’s a very good actor, especially given his almost unnatural ability to channel the voice and inflections of Patrick Troughton.

I liked this story, and only the abrupt ending keeps me from giving it full marks. As it stands, it’s a good story and one that’s worth hearing if you’re a fan of the Second Doctor.
