This was a truly forgettable episode. Most of the performances were sub par, boring, or just bad. The high points of the night were were Joe Munoz, Andrew Garcia, and Aaron Kelly.
By far, Joe had the best performance. He sang "You and I" by Jason Mraz. Even if you weren't watching the show, it was easy to see Joe's talents. My husband walked into the room while I was watching the episode and exclaimed over his singing (and he is very anti-American Idol). His voice is compelling and ear catching. Plus, he sang that particular song very well. He was one of my favorites from Hollywood week, but unfortunately he did not get enough camera time.
Another favorite from Hollywood week was Andrew Garcia; he sang Paula Abdul's song "Straight Up." Tonight, he sang a Fallout Boys tune. Though the panel of judges thought it was too depressing a song for him, I felt he did it justice and made it even better. Honestly, it's not that great of a song to begin with. Both Andrew and Joe have very different sounds from my third favorite of the night, Aaron Kelly.
Even though I can't stand country music, Aaron's got a way about him that makes you want to squeeze his cheeks and give him a big hug. He is very genuine, as is his story, and he is a pretty decent singer for being so young. His version of a Rascal Flats song was entertaining. Knowing very little about the original artist, it was easy to enjoy Kelly's version. These are the singers who are still standing out for me while the weeks progress.
One person that everyone is talking about except me is Mike Lynche, also known as "Big Mike." I don't see the hype. He sang Maroon Five's "This Love," and it was not better than the original. Mike's tone really bores me. I always feel like he is playing it safe with his singing.
The low points of the night was basically everyone else. Some of the worst performances were Tim Urban and Tyler Grady.
My question when Tim came out on stage was, "Didn't he get cut during Hollywood week?" They never fully explained why he was invited back, but his song choice was terrible. He could not compare to the original artist or Kris Allen. Was he trying to commit singing suicide on the very first episode? He had way too much to live up to, and his falsetto sounded terrible. It was like a dog was screeching! As the night progressed, another singer tried to steal the "worst of the night" award from Tim--Tyler Grady.
First, I've never liked Tyler Grady. He is a 70's rocker poser who can "fake sing." When I use that term I mean he distracts you with his weird gyrations, so the audience is fooled into thinking that he sings well. Again, he went the route of Urban by choosing a "song suicide." "American Woman" has been sang by many great artists. How did such a poser think he could pull off such a big tune? What a phony!
Fortunately, not all the singers came off sounding phony like Tyler. There were many who were obviously trying, such as John Park and Alex Lambert. I keep wanting John Park to do more because you don't see a lot of Asians on American Idol, but like so many others, his performance fell flat. Alex struggles because it is painfully obvious that he get stage fright. I hope he gets over his fears because he does have a nice voice. He just needs to learn how to perform to the audience and make us feel comfortable.
Overall, I was disappointed. I expected a lot more from the male singers, and they let me down. I was very happy when the episode ended and was barely able to motivate myself to place some votes for my favorites.

Good review. I cracked up when I read your Tyler Grady comment, lol. Gyrations are overrated. I guess "fake singing" is his thing. I wish I could "fake sing" too, but I don't have the talent for it. I can't gyrate all that well. lol. :-)

LOL! I know...he was so gross...I hated watching him dance. LOL!! I would love to see you shake that booty of yours on the dance floor. When was the last time you went dancing anyway?
