American Idol's Top 24 Singers Revealed!

The final episode from Hollywood week was better than its predecessor. This is the type of episode I'm most used to for a final reveal. I was also happy that Seacrest did not spend an undue amount of time recapping the 7 finalists from the previous night. Instead, the show started with the next person whose fate was to be revealed by the judges-- Janelle Wheeler.

Overall, I was very satisfied with how the judges broke the news to the 37 remaining contestants in the waiting room. Most of the time, every person that was featured was chosen to fill one of the top 24 spots. However, there were quite a few surprises as to who didn't make it as a finalist for season 9 (most of these people were glossed over with teary-eyed scenes and sad music).

I disagreed with quite a lot of the final picks, especially in terms of Angela Martin. One of the main reasons I enjoy reality shows such as this one is because I like to see people's dreams achieved. I'm a major dreamer myself, and I've never let setbacks stop me from trying again and again. I'm especially impressed with returning contestants who try two, three, even five times more to get on American Idol. That type of resolve and courage should always be rewarded, especially when the returning contestant has improved since their previous auditions. I didn't understand why Martin wasn't chosen, and I cried along with her when that news was revealed. It's these types of moments that can make or break a person's spirit (this was her third time trying out for the show), and I really hope Martin can make it through yet another setback. I loved her singing, inspirational stories, and I heartily disagree with the judge's final verdict.

As usual, there were many faces which I didn't remember from previous episodes. Why do the producers repeatedly highlight the same people over others? How do they know that Thaddeus Johnson is America's favorite over Joe Munoz? Regardless of the amount of television exposure, these "surprise" contestants have an edge that some of the others don't, at least in terms of my votes. I consider them "wild cards." Since no expectations were built by earlier episodes, I'm more open-minded to be wowed by what they can or cannot offer in terms of singing. Often, some of these unknown faces win my affection within the first couple of weeks of voting.

A major difference from season 9 and season 8 of American Idol is the way they revealed the final 2 spots. Last year, they had the remaining contestants come together to the judging panel for the final reveal. This year, they came separately and didn't know whether the other made it or not until after both had spoken with the judges. This wasn't as exciting for me. I wondered if the producers made this change, though, in respect of the winners. It does put a damper on your win when the person sitting next to you is crying because they didn't make it. Still, this was a part of the drama that I enjoyed.

The music that was played during the episode was exceptional, especially Lacey Brown's rendition of What a Wonderful World, which was played when she made it through to the final show as well as a couple of contestants who were glossed over with short clips of video indicating they had made it to season 9. I also liked the end song of the episode, Hallelujah, which I believe was also sung by one of the final contestants.

In the end, there are quite a few contestants who I don't think should have been chosen, which is why I rated this episode a little lower. I often wish the judge's reasons were explained more to the audience, so we don't feel quite so uninformed when our favorites leave the show. Still, there are many I'm excited to see perform including the young 16 year old male singer Aaron Kelly, family man Andrew Garcia, and Crystal Bowersox, who seems very unique and different considering some of the judge's female choices.

Unfortunately, I was both sick and traveling during the top 12 female performances, so I was unable to place my live votes. However, I do intend to watch the top 12 male performances tonight, so I can vote. I'm not sure whether I will write reviews on either episode; I'll have to see how I feel after I watch both shows.

That's cool that many people are performing including a 16 year old. That's pretty impressive. Too bad about the Angela woman who couldn't make it even though she had auditioned many times. Oh well. Good review.

Yeah, I was really surprised Angela didn't make it. She was better than a lot of the women they put through, such as Didi. So far, that girl is just not making it! She has a good voice but no idea what to do with it!
