My Favorite Chinese Soups

  • Feb 11, 2010
It's the time of the year again for that reunion dinner & feasting! Well, with the cold weather forecasted for the next few days, soups are the best remedy. Here are a few of my favorites; if you are not adventurous, better stop reading now
1
The Soup
It's a delicacy in the Chinese cuisine, especially the Cantonese Cuisine. One of the most popular with Cantonese and certainly will be an item on the reunion dinner for many.
2
Turtle Soup
Not a regular for most but this one has herbs in it so it's really good for the winterly nights.
3
Snake soup
Another delicacy but not easy to find. At one time, it was really popular in Hong Kong. I had tried some great ones in Toronto too. This soup is best for winter. It keeps you warm for a long time! Yum!!!
4
Pig's Lung Soup
It's truly gross for some, however if you've eaten them from young, you simply don't think much about it. Innards are very popular with the Chinese & Asians, so, what can I say? When in Rome, do as the Romans do ;-)
5
Pig's Organs Soup
This is chicken soup but with a twist, black chicken! It's cooked with herbs and if you are not used to herbal soups, my guess is you'll puke ;-) The idea is not to eat the chicken but merely to drink the soup!
6
Beef Balls Soup
How good this one is depends on the beef balls naturally. I found the best beef balls not in China or Hong Kong but in Indonesia & Thailand. Beats me why but they surely taste different. Easy to cook and I bet most of you will love it!
7
Black Chicken Soup
Supposed to be good for health. Beats me why but it's one of more normal kind, if black is your color, that is ;-) There is herbs in this one too. So, if you are not used to drinking herbal soup, you'll puke, lol...
8
Chicken Feet Soup
A home made soup really. Chicken feet is popular with the Chinese from Guangdong province, ie. Cantonese. It's a soup consisting mostly of chicken feet (as the name implies) & peanuts. Easy to cook and generally quite tasty!
9
Herbal Duck Soup
Again, herbs are commonly found in Chinese soups. They don't all taste the same though and as with steaks or pizzas, you do need to find the right restaurant/s for a good soup!
10
Bird's Nest Soup
This is one of those fancy & yet downright expensive soup. It may be salty or sweet, depending on how one cooks it. If I'm paying, I won't be taking this. As far as I'm concerned, it's way overpriced! There are better alternatives ;-)
